April 11, 200620 yr Good morning everyone. I have had a problem for sometime with Nvidia drivers. First, here is what I have:Nvidia 6800GT AGP / ASUS A7N8XDeluxe MB / Nvidia chipset / AMD2800xp+barton 2.1ghz / Win2000pro / 1.5 gigs dual ch ram pc3200 /550watt power supply. OK, my problem is that any driver past 71.89 will not work properly.I use 1152X864 32 res. With any new driver, The screen is black in FS9. I heard this is caused by the AA being above 4x. I set mine at 8 (highest setting on my card)because anything less looks bad. I have AF set to 2x or 4x. How can I do to get any newer driver to work? Also, will this improve performance any with the newer drivers, or is that just a myth? If the above is true with the black screen, I don't understand why the older drivers would let you use any AA setting but the newer drivers won't?? Just doesn't make any sense to me. Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated.
April 11, 200620 yr Well, that's 'Unified Architecture' for you!Seriously, and just my impressions.I have an FX5900 card and have tried drivers past the 5x.xx series and it seems that every one has had one type of problem or another and I always revert to the, in some people's minds, legendary 56.72's. They just seem to work well with my card.A while back there was a poll taken at Guru3d asking people which driver they use and which model card they have. Quite a few, and maybe a majority, either stick with or revert back to a driver that is numbered somewhere around their card model.I think that Nvidia does not give the older cards the necessary testing. "Check out the 5xxx series cards if you get a chance" type testing. Or "It should be OK".Since the major game or sim that I play is Flight Sim, using an older driver doesn't really bother me, but I can imagine that people who also play other graphic intensive games could get into a bind. Where FS9 works well with an older driver but the other game(s) do not or the other way around.
April 11, 200620 yr Author Hey Bob, Thanks for your reply. What you say makes alot of sense. As a matter of fact before I checked back here, I installed my older 66.93 drivers for kicks to see if they work better than the 7 series drivers. I will post back. The 5's maight be next. I will hopefully find a set that is stable, looks good, and gives me the best perfomance possible. I'll check back later, hopefully within an hour or two.
