DELL 2407WFP and ATI 850 XT

Featured Replies

WIll my ATI 850 XT card be capable or running this>?I am asking this because in my "settings" window I cannot as yet set the resolution past 1792 x 1344 and the 2407WFP is native at 1900 x 1200.Maybe I am using a "too old" driver? (Omega 2.6.87, as this runs my FS9 the best I found). So maybe i f I installed th latest driverts this will certainly be avilable?I am only expecting delivery next week so I am asking in advance.allen

Allen,I can't comment on the card's ability but as far as available resolutions go you need to install the software that comes with the monitor. Once you do the available resolutions will be shown including 16:10 format resolutions. The resolution you're seeing at the moment is probably based on the limitation of your current monitor. Cards can generally display higher res than monitors.Wait until you get the display until you change drivers.Cheers,

My report:Well, I cannot go back to the CRT after this change. It is so wide. Smooth for FS9, you cannot see any ghosting with it at all (as opposed to a DVD movie I am watching which does at times have that jerkiness). FPS is a good 24+ at most times, was 12 at KLAX which is about the same as my Viewsonic 19" flat screen. I max everything. Frame rates are best set to a 16 fps in which there are no "white squares".The night lights are OK, not as stunning as a CRT but acceptable. Actually the night-lit roads using UT are dimmer, which is a plus, as they were too artificially bright on the CRT (a dim setting in UT)and are actually more towards real with the WS. It was strange to see roads 30 miles away as a solid white line at night, but they fade out faster with the WS and give a more realistic gray appearance with this WS.Texture loading actually seems smoother. There is slight color banding with sunset gradiants, as expected. But is not a concern, minimal, and sometimes nillallen

Allen,Thanks for the report. A couple of questions... What magnification are you using? the default of x1 or something like x0.8?What processor are you using and how much RAM do you have?I rarely fly at night probably because of the lack of a true black with LCD technology but the prospect of a panoramic view is something I'm really looking forward to. It's encouraging that you're getting frame rates comparable to those on your 1280*1024 Viewsonic suggesting the 850XT is not working flat out.KLAX is one of my no-go airports because of the really poor frame rates. Something I hope my next system based on a AMD 4800 processor might take care of.Cheers,

I prefer to be at X 0.8 in the VCSystem is a P4 3.2G 540J with 2G parallel memory DDR-SDRAMASUS P5P800ATI 850 XT Soundblaster 2 ZS and M-Audio 2496The night view is as I like it, though I use UT with residential 'ON' and residentioal nightlights 'ON', and don't use my GE-PRO at night as the night city lighting in it is loud (...). I have another set for cities' textures that is a better blend with the nightlit residentials. View of city block lights is about the same (for me) as the CRT, with some loss of brilliance, and it seems it dims faster with distance, which is actually more realistic.I only flew to KLAX to try it out, as there was some slight lower overcast, maybe that is why it was flyable. I also use ASV6. My a/c was the Citation X by Flight1. I forgot to mention in a previous post that I did reduce the traffic to 50% upon entering the basin. And I imagine the 850XT is "working flat out" anyways. The issue with LCDs is the ghosting, and I have not seen any with FS9 using this 2407 model (revision A02). There is some banding of color gradients especially at sunset/sunrise near the horizon, but only minimal and you have ot look to notice and maybe even know what it is your looking for (??). At rare times, it can be more obvious though, though rarely.DVD movies however need to looked at from a distance of 5 feet, and there is some jittering there. But not FS9, it runs fine... so far...Was using DVI connector, will try try VGA now, but that should not improve anything, but contrary to that, may work less well.I bought the WS LCD for my music studio to create/compose/construct using Cubase SX3 and a multitude of expensive add-ons, hoping that it would run FS9 well as well. So I left the HyperThreading "enabled" as this is supported by and improves performance with my music software, but can hinder the FS9 performance some. I will try it in disabled mode latter. It satisfies my expectations and more, much more. It is the new way to sim, NO RETREAT.allen

Hi Allen,Your processor is pretty good so should be okay for FSX. I will wait until FSX is out to see if it can take advantage of SLI. If it can then I'll buy a suitable system to help the graphics as much as possible. I don't use any vitual cockpits - just the full forward view as I use Project Magenta Boeing software on a second PC.You should stay with the DVI connection. This provides a digital signal (no conversion required) whereas a VGA (analogue) connection will require conversion and the quality won't be as good. Keep Hyperthreading enabled too especially if you run any other programs on the FS9 PC. I remain unconvinced it slows down FS9 performance if left on.Enjoy your new screen! :-)

True, but I certainly notice a slowdown in my music sequencer if I leave HT disabled.I just departed KLAX for KSAN under hazy conditions and few clouds and was getting 18 fps in taxi. 22 in climb (25R) and 14 in the turn back to SLI VOR. I used RC4 too.

Good reason for leaving it enabled then :7 I'm limiting my frame rates to around 30. The spare CPU cycles can be used to good effect in retrieving scenery data. I find at busy airports that the worst performance is on finals with so many Ai aircraft visible. Once I've landed things improve dramatically.Glad to have another RC4 supporter. Hope you're enjoying it. :-waveCheers,
