July 4, 200619 yr Fellow Simmers, Howdy back again needing some veteran knowledge and brain power here ;) I just recently got on newegg and started looking at the fastest processors on there well the most expensive. :( Ok the most expensive AMD's I am looking at right now on there such as theAMD Athlon 64 FX62 Windsor 2000MHz HT Socket AM2 Processor Model ADAFX62CSBOX - Retail 64 bit Support: YesHyper-Transport Support: YesL1 Cache: 128KB+128KBL2 Cache: 2 x 1MBMulti-Core: Dual-CoreMultimedia Instruction: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, 3DNOW! In Stock $4.99 Three Day Shipping[6 Reviews] Move To Wish List $1,134.00I noticed it is Operating at a Frequency of 2.8GHz with L1 128x128 and L2 of 2x1 MB. Ok now here is the most expensive Intel.Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Presler 1066MHz FSB LGA 775 Processor Model BX80553965 - Retail 64 bit Support: YesHyper-Threading Support: YesL1 Cache: 24KB+32KBL2 Cache: 2 x 2MBMulti-Core: Dual-CoreMultimedia Instruction: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3Operating Frequency: 3.73GHzProcess Type: 65 nmSeries: Pentium Extreme EditionVoltage: 1.3VModel #: BX80553965 Item #: N82E16819116248 ** This item is warranted through the product manufacturer only. In Stock Free Three Day Shipping[22 Reviews] Move To Wish List $1,048.99 Ok this is where I get confused. The Operating Frequency seems to be just rocketing past the AMD at 3.73GHz the L1 is 24KB+32KB & L2 2x2MB wouldn't this just blow the door's off of that AMD? And it is about 100.00 bucks cheaper. Not that that is really a big deal when looking at these prices :P... To be honest I am not to educated on L1 & L2 Cache I know it helps speed the process up I guess like the guess ram before it hit's the DDR Ram etc. If someone was to choose between the two which one would you pick and why without the price being an issue say you just won a $2500.00 dollar lottery ticket :) Thanks, Josh
July 4, 200619 yr Whilst the AMD has a lower frequency it does more work per cycle. In short it is a more efficient design. However, Intel are launching a new processor, scheduled for release back end of this month, the Core 2 Duo (previously called Conroe).Current benchmarks shows the middle Conroe processor, the E6600, to be on par with the performance of the FX62 (which is currently the fastest desktop processor, particularly for gaming). But it comes with a
July 4, 200619 yr Hi Josh,A few words: wait, wait, wait. There is so much happening in the next 12 months with hardware, OS, and FSX, that you are better to hold your money and let it earn some interest!Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 5, 200619 yr As hurri said you cannot really compare raw mhz/ghz between Intel and AMD cpu's. Several years ago Intel made a design choice to go with higher clock speeds, and the result has been heat, among other things. Now with the Core 2 Duo Intel has switched paths, and decided to go with lower clock cycles but they have increased the overall speed of the cpu by other methods--cache, mem interface, etc.The good thing is, the core 2 duo will make AMD lower their prices, too.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
