Need new sound card.

Featured Replies

Well, I finally figured my sound problems to be an old sound card. I disabled it and used the onboard card and the sound was OK. I don't want the loss in frame rates and am going to buy a new card.I have read that Creative is a good card but that the drivers are bloated and offer lots of options that I don't want.I want a cheap card that will work with 2 speakers as that's all I have. I may upgrade in the future. What is good?JimCYWG

Eventhough you said that they come with lots of options that you dont need. Just get a Creative one, maybe like an SB0570 Audigy SE, it'll only set you back around $25US in stores, cant get much cheaper than that and still have good quality. Its a good card and the drivers are fine.

Are you sure you are losing frame rates in FS9? In my experience, FS9 sound has a very low demand on performance and I've found neglible measured FPS difference between using onboard or addon sound cards. FSX may be a different issue with its 5.1 sound support though, but we won't know for sure until next month.Gary

I suppose. I guess the offboard or whatever it is called sound card must use cpu cycles but not sure if the onboard uses more. Does it make that much of a difference? I am going to continue to use the onboard one for the monment.JimCYWG

In my experience, a very marginal performance hit with FS9 by using onboard sound (;) Gary

I suppose the cound card also takes frames as well but it just seems that the onboard card might take more. Tough to say. I am going to leave the onboard on for now. One thing I did notice is that the onboard card can't produce music like the sound blaster did. Sound is wavey and quiet. Because of that, the sound card will be replaced.JimCYWG
