September 7, 200619 yr I am getting sudden crashes to desktop in FS9. My setup consists of a dual display in XP Pro, with the second display reserved for GPS, AI traffic etc. The system has worked fairly well until I upgraded from an ATI9800 Pro to the current GeForce 7800 GTX, so I am not sure if this is a coincidence or if my problem is due to something else e.g. corrupt or duplicate files. I've checked out some of the work-throughs from previous threads on this subject and I did a 'dxdiag' check on the display. When I run 'Test Direct 3D' I do not get the usual spinning cube - just a mish-mash of green and white. I've attached a dxdiag report. I don't know if this points to a problem with the graphics card or the way I have configured it. I do not have problems with other programs. The CPU is running at around 50 C. I did have two duplicate AFCAD files but these have been deleted without any improvement. I anyone can interpret the attached report and offer a 'cure' I'd be grateful. John
September 7, 200619 yr With a Direct3D fault reported by dxdiag, you should reinstall chipset and motherboard drivers, THEN the graphic card rivers, THEN the latest version of DirectX9.0 from the MS website. The problem is most likely caused by leftover drivers from the previous ATI card installation, so you should also use Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all traces of ATI drivers from your system. Finally, you should open FS9.cfg and delete the section related to the grahhics card anmd check for multiple entries as you may now have two entries in the cfg relating to cards. There is no need to replace the whole FS9.cfg, just delete the few lines tha appear underDISPLAY.DEVICEAllcott
September 7, 200619 yr Author Thanks a bunch Allcott. I followed all your instructions except for reinstall of DirectX9.0. Dxdiag display test is working fine now. Will do some test flying later and post again. John John
September 7, 200619 yr Author Sadly, although I now have the spinning cube I still CTD after about 10 minutes. I kind of suspected that there was more to it than settings - maybe dodgy RAM or a suspect CPU. I can fly the default Cessna 180 for hours - it seems to happen more with complex addon aircraft. Hm...any more ideas? Thanks again,John John
September 8, 200619 yr Author Good news! I re-booted from cold this evening and flew a complex aircraft in real weather with #2 monitor displaying AI traffic in three active windows, and FSNav. There were no problems. Seems like Allcott hit the jackpot! What a man! Thanks again!John John
