Which Drive?

Featured Replies

I have two identical SATA 120gig Hard Drives. Currently FS9.1 sits on the primary drive (c:), along with four other games. Other than that, windows XP is the only other install on my c: drive. My programs are on the secondary drive (f). I keep the system drive defragged constantly. Do I need to swap this around and install the games on the secondary hard drive? Would I see benefit, or not? Keep in mind, my drive gets defragged with O&0 every other day. I installed games/sims on my primary with the understanding that most games tend to embedd files in the system drive, and I did not want 2 drives accessing files for one game at the same time. Let me hear some opinions, and THANK YOU for all the valuable information found in these forums. I have been ghosting around for a few weeks, and finally I post. Thanks in advanceDanon O.

Leave FS where it is, but move the paging file and the addon scenery folder to the `other` drive. You DO want two drives accessing files for one game at the same time as it massively speeds up the loading process. Bit like a pseudo-RAID configuration! There's a `how-to` with my name on it in this forum somewhere, and note that you can actually experiment with this to see if it works for you by simply copying the addon scenery folder to the other drive, then creating a duplicate scenery .cfg that changes the address of all the addon scenery to point to the new folder. Swap this new file for the original, keeping the original scenery.cfg somwhere outside the main FS folder, then boot the sim. If it loads quicker, keep it. If it doesn't, delete the adon scenery folder on the other drive, replace the original scenery. cfg and you've lost nothing except fifteen minutes of your time.Allcott

Thanks for the quick response. I will give this a go when I get home. Sounds quick and painless. Again, thanks so much.Danon -

Just the "addon scenery" folder, or the "scenery" folder as well? ThanksDanon
