Anybody here got the nVidia 7900 GTO ?

Featured Replies

If so, are you loving it?I was going to get the 7900 GTX late last week, but the GTO just popped online in the US and is available for about one half the price of the GTX. So I just wanted to check with any simmers who might be using it right now.JS

Got mine today and installed it with nVidia 91.47 drivers. Works extremely well. Excellent colors, somewhat more "human" and realistic than ATi Radeon. But very little improvement if any in fluidity and visual performance (1024 of additional PC RAM provided an extra kick for me rather than doubling the video RAM) which is a tad surprising (disappointing?) given its 512MB of V-RAM. Textures load faster in SPOT view which is a positive. There are very slight suggestions of texture shimmers on my PMDG add-on a/c that I've never had with the Radeon. The ATi X850 has been a totally superb card. I really switched to nVidia to position myself for the Matrox Triplehead2go set-up but I don't know if I want to spend the money now.Hope you'll be happy with the GTO.JS

JS,I assume you are talking about FS9, because FSX certainly seems to appreciate as much GPU power that you can throw at it, versus FS9 which is just as happy with a Radeon 9800 Pro. I bought the GTO because it has 512M VRAM, which will go nicely with my 3360x1050 setting for FS9 and FSX. Also, it was barely any more $ (actually less) than the 7900 GT 256M, coming in at US$220 after rebate for me. Surely it has to be quicker than the 16M Voodoo3 PCI, upgraded from a 4M Diamond Viper V330 PCI just recently, that I am currently using :-lol Gary

Yes, it is FS9 I am discussing. I am probably not migrating to FSX in the immediate future. I guess I was spoiled by the X850 XT PE card, that's all I can say! I am chatting on the DELL XPS Video forum about this and one of the gaming gurus there has suggested I overclock the GTO card but I don't know if I want to mess with that; I am unfamiliar with the procedure and the risks.Anyway, all is not necessarily lost as of this time. I have more tests to conduct. I will say, the GTO's coloring is slightly superior to the Radeon, but beyond this, not a whole heck of a lot of diff.JS

If you didn't notice an FS9 performance boost going from the X850 XT PE to the 7900 GTO, then you certainly won't notice anything by overclocking your new video card. From my reading of this forum over the years, FS9 graphics performance peaked around the 9800 Pro / 6600 GT ERA, and anything newer than this has generally yielded little to no performance boost except perhaps with higher AA/AF settings being achievable. Having said that, some have reported in this forum that a new gen video card upgrade has yielded a significant boost in FPS. Generally though, no change in performance seems to be the norm. One thing you should definately notice is a significant performance boost in just about every other modern 3D graphics game BUT FS9 with your new graphics card.Gary

Yeah, fair enough, Gary. My thinking was, well, if I'm gonna change my beautiful Radeon for nVidia so I can go the Triplehead2go route, I might as well REALLY upgrade the card at the same time and improve FS9 even further from its already fabulous performance on my machine. I didn't want to spend a fortune so instead of the GTX, I bought the GTO. Incredibly, even with nVidia 91.47 drivers, the eVGA card produces very slight suggestions of those really old crappy aircraft texture shimmers at certain angles in SPOT view! The Radeon was rock solid and stronger in all respects. I need FSAA of 4x on the GTO to equal FSAA of 2x on the Radeon card. (That's why at midnight last night, I was in my kitchen lovingly dusting the Radeon card with a very soft, long bristle brush and getting every speck of visible dust off before packing it up--I might return to this baby one day in the future!)Anyway, other than this disappointment, at least I am now all-set if I decide to get 3x19" monitors for FS9 'cos neither ATi nor MATROX support the right drivers for ATi cards to use Triplehead and ATi told me they have no plans to do so either which is quite a bummer. If I had my druthers and this had not been an issue for the Triplehead, I'd've prolly upgraded to a Radeon x1900 or some such giant, and been rather more satsified, I'm sure. But then again....maybe my X850 yields the best possible performance for Fs9, who knows? Ya' can't win in this never ending leap-frog game of hardware catching up with software, catching up with hardware...it's eternal and eternally frustrating (and costly!) too. I am very happy with my DELL XPS Gen 4 and as such, I will continue to use it exclusively for FS9 with my huge fleet of add-on a/c and other stuff. The additional 1024 of RAM I put in last week seems to have speeded things up more than anything. Load times are good and everything seems a bit faster and a tad smoother as well in all phases and views. This has been positive in my view (literally).JS
