October 6, 200619 yr I'm trying to conserve "office real estate" with my upgrade plans and I'm thinking of going to a micro ATX case (actually, I like the look of the Antec Fusion case!).Are there any downsides to mATX boards? I'm planning on a E6600 with 2G sitting on a P5LD2-VM. I don't see any shortcomings other than fewer slots (which I wouldn't be using anyway!).
October 6, 200619 yr the only real issues to consider are:1) Is there space for enough drives / future expansion... 2) cooling - Is the smaller case going to have enough airflow to run a high end video card and the bigger PSU needed to supply it... 3) Is it going to be louder because of the need for smaller faster running fans to do #2 ?If you can find a good case and quiet fans for everything, then you should have no problems using a mATX setup.--2002cbr600f4i
October 8, 200619 yr The actual desk `footprint` turns out to be not that much smaller than a standard tower case exceopt in vertical height and the MATX will limit you greatly on the mobo and graphic card fitments - and just at the point where the `next gen` stuff is coming out bigger and chunkier than before. And you need a PSU to match. The biggest desk space saver is the monitor. Wall mount a good LCD flattie and you won't care where the tower goes! Allcott
October 8, 200619 yr >Thanks CBR.>>I just sold my 2001 last spring. :( Great bike!Yes, yes it is! I just threw it on my buddy's dyno last week and she's turning 94.9 HP with 49 Ft/lbs torque... Definitely a little missle. I have a Power Commander, a Micron exhaust, a Ventura Pack luggage system and a scottoiler on it. Absolutely love it. Nothing makes you forget about a crappy day at the office better than blasting up to 115MPH (briefly) on the way home. :)You didn't hang up the gear permanently did you?!?!?--2002cbr600f4i
October 9, 200619 yr Thanks Allcott. The cases I'm looking at are either an Antec Fusion or Silverstone LC18 (most likely the Fusion). I like the idea of the multi-media capablility with the display and volume control. As far as limitations for future fitments... do you think future cards would extend out farther from the mobo? Should that happen then any case would require replacement.
October 9, 200619 yr Ya, I pretty much hung up the gear permanently. Every time I rode that bike I was in the tripple digits and I had the feeling it was only a matter of time. In 2005 two people my age that I knew died on sport bikes... made me take a hard look at my motality and priorities.

Should>that happen then any case would require replacement.Looking at the sizes of some of the monsters that are out now, I would say they won't fit. And there's no option to hang them out the back. If they don't fit, you can't use them. As general-purpose boxes they are fine, but their modularity is generally much less, making upgrading trickier.Allcott

Once on the speed camera on the dual carriageway, once on the 30mph limit. :)Allcott
October 10, 200619 yr I sold my 1200 Bandit for the same reason. Couldn't enjoy it under 90mph. Am now perfectly happy with an 04 883 Sportster (my 50th bike and 29th HD). Just completed a 2800mi trip through CO-NM-TX and enjoyed every mile in perfect weather. At 68, though, I am riding less and less and FSX may take over entirely in 07------that is if you guys can get it running properly!Scott
