7900 GTO is not as good as my old Radeon X850 XT PE !

Featured Replies

(In Fs9):It is a LOT faster, yeah. And very smooth. But the quality of coloring and the quality of texturing are definitely inferior to my older X850 XT PE. I am kinda torn about this because I got the GTO card to enable me to go for MATROX Triplehead2go screens. But at this rate I am not really sure if I want to do it. The ATI Radeon card was just....more solid with its rendering, smoother and more subtle. There is something slightly imperfect and "wavy" or "watery" at times with the nVidia card in SPOT view. Sky textures at dusk are less well rendered and visibly wavier with layers of light and dark blue leading into the night sky. Dark night land textures are quite horrible in places, especially at and around airports.But...I do get higher (35 to 50% more) frames and greater fluidity in all phases of flight and with all aircraft. And loading times are faster although maybe 2GB of RAM helps here too.I am sort of half tempted to reinstal the Radeon at this rate. But I probably shan't do so for a while. And maybe not at all.Actually, I don't know what I shall do.Any comments or suggestions welcome!JS

Apart form the obvious suggestion that you reinstall the drivers having first ensurde you removed the old ATI drivers using the uninstall/Driver Cleaner Pro method we've suggested many times before, you are aware that the FSAA rendering is very different between ATI and Nvidia cards? You need to use the latest drivers to enable one or other of the TSAA modes to enable alpha textures to be AA'd.But the layering you describe is typical of choosing 16-bit rather than 32-bit resolution. Make sure you have 32 bit selected not only in the FS menu, but also on your desktop. But your first stop should be to remove all traces of the old ATI drivers as there can be notable conflicts.Allcott

Yes, I did remove the old ATI drivers very thoroughly with Driver Cleaner Pro both before removing the ATI card and then after installing the new nVidia card. I was in SAFE mode for both removals. I also checked subsequently for any possible traces of ATI drivers afterwards and nothing seemed to be visible. The 32 bit res point is interesting; I'll check into that.Thanks.JS

It's always been a debate, but many people consider ATi IQ to be better than Nvidia. Your story is not the first time I have heard of such things.Get a Radeon X1950 Pro instead. It's the update of my X1900GT

I am strongly tempted to get another Radeon. Except that I might still wish to experiment with Matrox Triplehead2go soon enough. So for now the nVidia card stays.I posted again above with my system performance. Colors and imperfections aside, the system really is amazing. It's already old technology.JS
