November 28, 200619 yr I finally did a total upgrade of my computer and purchased a new dual core with a standard video card. I've read all over about DirectX 10 and to wait for a decent video card that's compatible with DX10.Is this the case, or do they exist now? Anyone have any recommendations for a decent card for under $300?I have the dual core 2.1 Ghz with 4 Gigs of Ram, so hopefully the video card should be the last upgrade for a decent experience. I understand that you can't max out everything in FSX anyway.

Anyone have any>recommendations for a decent card for under $300?>The first DX10 cards are out (all two of them), but not for under $300. Not yet. They cost about $4000-$500-$600+ right now. Plus FSX has not yet been updated for DX10, so even having the DX10 card and Vista right now, you will not see DX10 visuals on FSX until that DX10 update is released.By April or so, I'd expect to see DX10 cards getting near the $300 range...probably more like $350 though, as DX10 will be on high-end cards at the start, and you won't see a high-end graphics card for much less than $350 at first.Barring some unforeseen circumstances, by this summer, you'll start seeing mainstream (<$300) cards that support DX10.>I have the dual core 2.1 Ghz with 4 Gigs of Ram, so hopefully>the video card should be the last upgrade for a decent>experience. If it's decent, you may be able to stick with it until the DX10 cards hit your $300 price point. On the other hand, if the video you have right now is not sufficient at all for FSX, then you will, if you want, need to upgrade it for the short-term. If so then I'd suggest a 7900 card or something like that. I'd only get a 7600 card if I was really on a budget...but since you'd only use the card about 6 months anyway, it in option...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2530 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
November 28, 200619 yr It's a 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE.I did some more indepth googling and found the DX10 for $500. I guess I wont know until everything is done and tweaked. Even by when the new ones come out for under $300, there will be enough patches to stop all the grumbling.
November 28, 200619 yr I would respectfully suggest that, unless you already have access to the Vista RTM build on MSDN (or other sources), you wait for Vista to RTM at the end of January before purchasing a DX10-compatible card. You'll need Vista with its support for DX10 (There is no DX10 for XP) to get the most out of the card. Plus, there's only a limited number of very pricey DX10-compatible cards choices available today. I don't believe there are Vista RTM drivers for these cards at the moment either - only Beta builds. Come February, Vista will be available & hopefully there will be a greater selection of DX10 cards, RTM drivers for them, & perhaps with more choices, somewhat lower prices. Some cards may have better support for FSX than others too. Unless money is no object, you may find that the expensive DX10 card you buy now is not the best come February 2007...
