NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS and SLI ?

Featured Replies

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS and SLI ?"I really don't know what SLI is or if I need to use it ?I am planning to get a new system and the compter company (VELOCITY) suggests that you upgrade to a 700 watt PS for the GeForce 8800 GTS to use SLI. The system Intel 6600 core 2 DUO 1t 2.4 GHZ with 2 gigs corsair extreem ram comes with a standard 500 watt PS. Anyone have any opinions ? Or should I get another card like a NVIDIA 7950 GT ? (512 MB )The system I plan on obtaining is highlited below:I currently have a p4 3.0 ghz 512 mb ram and integrated graphics (up to 64 mb) but my BIOS shows I could only raise it from 8mb, where it was set to 32 mb ---Did not help any as you can see system is really weak to run FSX. Runs, with stutters and long delays but at 8-28 FPS,not much senery no autogen, weather or traffic and blurry.I am upgrading system to run FSX: Intell core 2 Duo E 6600 dual 2.40 Mhz, 4 MB L2 cache, Ansus P5NSLI NVidea Nforce 570 SLI, Intell edition, DDR2 PCI expess motherboard, 2 gigs corsoir extreem memory XMS2 DDR2 low latency CL4, 500 watt power supply, 2 x 250 gb hard drives. My question, since I picked a graet CPU, is what video card to get?Considering 7950 GT 512 MB, or7900 Gs 256 MB, orX1900 XT 256 MB. or maybe even a 8800 GTS but I'm not into the Vista/ 10 issues and don't want to get the 700 watt recommended power supply!.WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE BEST OVERALL GPU to run FSX ?Thank you so much for your input.Bob

No current game needs 2x8800s in SLI configuration. Furthermore, FSX doesn't even USE SLI, so the question is really rather moot. The best overall GPU will be the 8800, almost no question. The card is not only fast in XP/DX9, it is also DX10 compliant, so is ready for the DX10 patch of FSX that will follow sometime later next year, if Vista does find favour as an OS for FS.However, by then other cards may be out that will be cheaper and better than the 8800, better suited for FSX, or FSX may have been pacthed to favour SLI cards over single ones. Who knows?7950GT would be my choice, from those listed, for that rig.Allcott

Bob,If you are talking about Flight simming (FS9/FSX)Instead of 2 X 8800GTS go for 1 8800GTX.At the least go 1 x 8800GTS. IMO, its either one 8800GTS or one 8800GTX if you are building a nice system like you are doing. If you already have a 7900 or 7950 or something...then you could continue using it and wait for a DX10 later on.But I just don't get why you would go for a high end 7xxx card.IF you don't want to spend money on a video card... look at 7600XT or something for $130 or so. As far as the PSU. Well... With one 8800 Card and your 2 Hard Disks..the 500Watt psu may suffice if you are not overclocking. or you could upgrade to the 550. If I were you, I would get the 750 and not worry about PSU for a long time. Its worth that extra $120 IMO. BTW...The 8800 Does not generate that much heat. Mine remains at 79degree constant. Its a great card with lots of memory 765MB. Even if you are not going for the DX10 as yet.Apart from that your system looks nice.my 2c.Manny
