Your MB recommendations for a E6600

Featured Replies

Hi guys,I've been stuck with my P4 2.4 and 7800GS for a while now and decided to treat myself to a new machine.I've set my mind on pretty much all components except the most crucial one ...the motherboard. The CPU is a E6600. OC abilities are a must. SLI is not really necessary as I plan to run a 8800 GTX but, hey if it comes with the board I'll take it. Other than that a good onboard sound chip and ...that's it.I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks,Nick

Core i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz on Water, eVGA Classified x58, 12 GB Corsair Dominator GT @ 2000mhz, Radeon HD 5870 1GB, (4) 30GB OCZ Vertex SSD's in RAID 0, X-Fi Titanium Sound, Galaxy DXX 1kW PSU, Windows Vista x64, Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Speakers

Partial to the EVGA 680i SLI only because I haven't had any issues and OCing is made ultra easy through bios. Alot of people like the ASUS P5W for ocing as well.I guess you can't really go wrong as features are comprable and both are known to arrive DOA on occasion so be prepared for possible RMA.Good luck!

Same here! This EVGA 680i has been great with no problems whatsoever. I OC'd my E6600 to 3.1 and that's with a fanless Thermalright XP-90 heatsink. I tested it up to something like 3.4 or so but didn't keep it there 'cause I'm trying to keep it quiet without fans and the CPU was just getting too hot at that speed. FSX runs really smooth with FPS in the mid to upper 20s (except in big cities), and all the sliders are to the right (not all the way, though). I'm really enjoying this setup!

I would get the ASUS P5N-E SLI Nforce 650i SLI90% of the 680i features but ~$100 less.See here for more details:http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2894Glenn

Yeah Glenn, thanks for mentioning that. I usually offer that bit of advice but neglected to do so in that post. Unless you need a couple extra SATA connectors (as I intend) and the ability to couple the LAN ports, there is not much of a reason to choose the 680 over the 650.
