February 28, 200719 yr I am new to this forum so I apologize if I can't find the answer to my video problem, however, let me give you a little background as to what I have purchased and the problem that I am encountering..I had a system built that has a 6600 Conroe core2 Duo processor, an Asus PB5-E motherboard, 2 gig of PC6400-800 ram with an ATI 1600/1650 graphics card with 512mb and a IBM/Hatachi 250gig HD...........I would appreciate it if somebody could send me their (3-D graphics card settings): i.e. (Antialiasing settings, anistrophic settings etc. etc).I am getting a lot wavy, jaggy ground terrain on buildings etc. and scenery that is further out that a 1000yds or so.. I don't know enough about the settings for this card and would appreciate any help to rid my terrain of these unwelcome features. My current fps in MSFS2004 are around 70, however, I haven't loaded the PMDG stuff yet cause I still have the 'terrain jaggies'..Anybody know what I should do??Regards,Sunbear
February 28, 200719 yr Hi Sunbear,I'm new to the ATI Catalyst Center also, so I know how it feels. This guide will help:http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.htmlI'm not sure anyone can give you exact settings that will work for your setup (maybe someone will prove me wrong), it doesn't seem to work like that. I have different profiles saved for different types of flying, as I haven't yet found any one perfect setting. As an example here are my settings for 'best' outside view with ground textures only in FSX (no autogen I don't like it)Standard Settings = custom settings in useAnti-aliasing 6xTemporal anti-aliasing (ticked)Anistropic Filtering 16x HQAF (ticked)CATALYST A.I. DisabledMipMab Detail High QualityWait for vertical refresh off - unless application specifiesAdaptive anti aliasing DisabledSupport DXT texture formats (ticked)Alternate pixel center (unticked)This gives pin sharp textures outside the cockpit to the far distance, but the virtual cockpit shimmers like mad LOL. (I think the far distance will probably shimmer too but I drop the visibility to hide it). This setting is great for VFR flights and for taking screenshots, but the shimmering VC gets on my nerves eventually. One thing I have noticed is that just turning everything up doesn't always give the best result, on my monitor if I enable CAT A.I. and Adaptive anti aliasing with the above settings the ground textures just become blurry again. The Catalyst Center forgets your settings anyway, so it isn't too much of a problem to play with the settings until you find those that will work for you. If for example you change something and get a massive performance hit, just set back to the default, nothing lost. If you find settings you like save them as a profile in the center and then you can select it 'on the fly' whilst running the sim if you pop out of full screen for a while and have the ATI icon in the the tool tray. (or set it before you start FS2004 if you find really good settings)
February 28, 200719 yr No problem, I was daunted by it at first but for the last few days I've just messed with the settings to see what happens, knowing I can always default and start again.I've noticed tonight there is something 'buggy' in CCC regarding the Adaptive AA settings. I've been getting some odd results when switching from full screen to window mode. Not sure I have quite figured what is going on, but be aware of this as I can get a good result with it enabled then the distance goes blurry then I disable it and it is crisp again and visa versa, it may be the setting is not 'sticking' properly or maybe I don't fully understand what this one does yet. Time for more research of old threads ;0)
March 2, 200719 yr Tried your settings and still have these moving, jagged, wavy-edges on buildings and distant scenery. I set my scenery distance to the very minimum on the slider scale but still get the 'jaggies'...What about my scenery settings in FS? Do you have any tips on these? I would appreciate any advise on these settings such as scenery complexity, autogen, mipmapping, texture rendering etc. Thanks again for your previous help.sunbear
March 3, 200719 yr It's hard to know without seeing it. Some unwanted effects occur when the settings are too high, i.e. I get more shimmer with anti alias set very high than lower settings. You will need to check in FS what settings you have also, as these may overide the card settings. Do the jaggies come out in screen shots? I would presume this is down to anti alias settings, as generally this is what it does, reduces the jaggies from the edges of objects. Your screen res is going to make a difference also if it is set low.
March 3, 200719 yr I have this problem to with my ATI X1950 cards. It only happens though when I have the Catalyst AI function active. Try disabling it. Or set it to standard. I haven't detected any negative effects on visuals or performance in FS with it off, but it may affect your other apps! So you may need to turn it back on for those. March 3, 200719 yr My experience is, the ati cards don't like the AF settings. Try and make it equal with AA 4/4 or 6/6, or even better AA 4/6 AF preferred.Be aware that your sound card can do a lot of muzzle if it's not set up properly.
