June 6, 200719 yr I am ordering a new computer (for FSX and LD767) and the dual 8800 Ultra are $800 more than the dual 8800 GTX's. That's a big jump on a $6000 Dell Quad core, 4 MB Ram etc.My question is: Will I ever see any real difference with the Ultra and is it worth the extra $800 beans. It'll push a $6000 computer to $6800 - which is starting to get a bit high.I'd appreciate this boards expert advise and will go with the consensus.Thank YouPaul Paul Gugliotta
June 7, 200719 yr The newer 8800 GTX Ultras are only a little bit faster than a std 8800 GTX for an awful lot more money, apparently you can overclock a std 8800 GTX to 8800 Ultra speeds without breaking sweat. On top of that, FSX is still CPU limited, even with SP1 and you will see about a 1 FPS improvement over a 8800 GTX using an Ultra in FSX if you are lucky, in fact you might as well use an 8800 GTS 640mb.Of course this may change once we have the FSX DX10 patch for Vista, but nobody knows just know, and if anyone does know, they wont say :)I'd go for a 640mb 8800 GTS, then when the FSX DX10 patch is out maybe think about a new graphic card then and trade in your current one to offset the price, apparently Nvidea are hard at work on the 9800 series cards that are going to be much faster than an 8800 GTX or Ultra, they will be second gen DX10 cards that will be released once more DX10 software has got a chance to be released and mature, they may be out soon after the FSX DX10 patch? I've heard the end of the year, maybe then ATI will have a decent DX10 card as well. The 8800 Ultra is a waste of money IMHO.
June 7, 200719 yr Also, having read your post again, it looks like you are talking dual 8800 cards, this would be in SLI, if your main aim is for FSX, then SLI at this point might even slow you down. What is your monitor resolution for this planned rig? I have a 24" widescreen LCD with native resolution of 1920x1200 along with a regular 19" LCD, and my single 8800 GTS 640mb is fine.I say, with your budget, get the best dual core Conroe or even quad core Intel CPU (along with motherboard and ram and PSU ETC) and just one quality brand 8800GTX for now, otherwise you are throwing money away.More ... and especially more expensive is not always best.Of course if you want more detailed custom build instructions, then don't hesitate to ask, myself or many guys here will be happy to help.Good luck
June 7, 200719 yr Get one 'ittle bitty 8800GTS. That'll hold you till Oct/Nov because . . http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39829Then, get one 9800 and drive triple, 42" 1080p LCDs.
June 7, 200718 yr Yup, have a 620mb 8800GTS just now myself, if the FSX DX10 patch looks like it will need more graphic card performance, this will be my Christmas present to myself :)
June 7, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the responses. I took your advice and went for the dual 8800 GTX not the Ultra and saved $700. The monitor is a Dell 24" flat panel and I'll combine it with a Dell 21" regular monitor. It cost $5950 in total. Lets see what performance I will get.I'll keep an eye out later this year for the 9800 card, but rarely did a newer card really knock my socks off. It always was the CPU for flight sim.
