July 14, 200718 yr I currently have 2 x 250GB HDDs. My previous WinXP installation on C drive went wheels up, so I installed in on drive D. It all works good now, except the boot.ini file is on drive C and I want to move drive C to another computer. How do I remove the C drive without upsetting my D drive Windows XP installation given that the boot.ini on C: will no longer be present?Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11

July 14, 200718 yr Author But my boot.ini file is on C drive, which will disappear when I take that HDD out. Do I put this boot.ini on D drive then?Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
July 14, 200718 yr Yes, you will need to copy the file boot.ini onto D;. I have never done what you are intending, but it should be possible- I assume D: will become C: when you remove your current C: drive and boot.ini will need to be edited to look for drive0 (it seems that currently D: is drive1).Since I have not done this I am not recommending how to do it, but instead referring you to a source so that you can make your own decisions about editing boot.ini. Anytime you change the boot configuration it's potentially dangerous. It would appear that if you tried editing boot.ini and removing your current C: drive, and if that didn't boot for you, then you could re-install C: (with it's original version of boot.ini), and research what went wrong. Here's a hint: I would imagine that if you open boot.ini up with Notepad, that you will see:multi(1)disk(1)rdisk(1)partition(1)which I would change to:multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1) (on your file copied to your current D: drive). but use this at your own risk.Good luck- Bruce. July 14, 200718 yr Author Thanks for your suggestions Bruce. I'll give them a try. Worst comes to worst I get to resintall WinXP and FS9/X again, but I ain't no newbie to that experience :-lolGary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
July 14, 200718 yr Me neither :)Good luck Gary, some of this should be intuitive when you open boot.ini and see where the switches are now.Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
