Anyone using true hw raid instead of fakeraid ?

When trying to install Linux on a raid drive I encountered some concepts I never seen before i.e fakeraid true hw raid. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowtoWhat we supposedly get on a motherboard is fakeraid and true hw raid is supposedly better. That leeds to the question has anyone used true hw raid with FS and how do we know what we got? I never see this terms when reading specifications on mb and raid controller cards.
