August 18, 200718 yr Moderator For this motherboard, at least. I may not know overclocking but I do know computers and from what I've read and determined on my own, the P5N32-E SLI 680i board from Asus is a DOG when it comes to overclocking quads. They're super with duo's from what I've been able to tell.If I had a buck for every BSOD I got with this board I could pay for the replacement I ordered from Evga.I won't go into the details, suffice to say that I tried every combination I could think of and some others with guidance from experienced overclockers and I could not get the Q6600 G0 CPU up to 3G.I'm glad I'm not married any more, I'd have a xxxxxx of a time explaining this one. Did lots of research but missed this one entirely.I will post results when I get the new board up and running. We live and learn.BTW, anyone want a slightly used but heavily cursed P5N32-E SLI cheap? :)VicSystem:Q6600 G0 CPUP5N32-E SLI 680i MoBo <---not for long2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM (5-5-4-12-2T)320G 7200 HD partitioined for XP/Vista/Programs2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0500G 7200 HD for backupSATA DVD burnerEvga 8800GTS 640 PCIxKandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/ RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
August 19, 200718 yr That's a real shame, Vic, after all the effort you put into it. I don't know near what you know about these things, but I shyed away from nVidia chipsets on account of a whole lot of FSB "wall" stuff I read, not to mention the high pitched squealing from the evga boards, which, I guess, they've corrected. It just seemed like more trouble than it was worth when P35 boards run like the Eveready Bunny. You may recall a cryptic reference of mine to Q6600's and the GTL Reference Voltage thing. That one is several pay grades above me, but the gist of it is that the two dual cores have to communicate with each other, and it gets harder as you push them up the FSB. That particular voltage has something to do with it. I decided that, too, wasn't worth the trouble, but you're stuck with it for the time being. Might be worth your while to look into it.-Seadog
August 19, 200718 yr If you're looking to try something else, the X38 chipsets are coming in a couple of weeks. http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=9630Ebay that 680i quick. So far, it's the mainstay chipset for Nvidia's Video SLI. It's the only modern alternative for SLI. However Intel and Nvidia have been wheeling and dealing lately. Scuttlebutt has it the X38 might include Video SLI support. Then, the Penryns in November. Penryn + X38 = two non-events (beyond currently available tech), imHo. Both will have a cool tweak or two. But I still don't see any significant reason to wait beyond right-now for a system build. The O/C-in', 'puter builder is really hitting the sweet spot, right now.
August 19, 200718 yr Author Moderator Hey Doug - I invented a lot of new words during this exercise, but I also learned a lot. I really like the 680i chipset and from everything I've found out, there are a lot of successful overclocks, just not using the Asus P5N32. In hunting through the various ioverclock forums, there are quite a few Evga680i/Q6600 g0 combos in the 3.4 - 3.6 range. I'd settle for 3.2.Considering my current needs, I'll give the 680i another shot. Worse comes to worse, I'll bite the bullet and wait 6 months until the prices come down on the newest stuff not released yet.Being oldish (70) and single with no kids and still working full time I decided I can't take it with me, I don't want it to go to the state so I'm planning on running out of $$ and breath at the same time. :)Considering what I spend on my woodworking hobby, my computer escapades are lightweight. Now to wait for the new parts.:-jumpy VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/ RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
August 19, 200718 yr Author Moderator Good point Sam but I decided to stay with the 680i for now. I figure that by next June the Penryn's and the new mobo's will be down to earth a bit in pricing. Also we might have DX10 in a stable setting.Contacted the vendor for an RMA - if they OK it it would cost me 15%. If not, ebay it is. :)VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/ RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
