AMD5000+ with 8800gts (640) - mini review

Featured Replies

hey guys, just thought I would give my input of how my system runs fsx, you guys have been a lot of help in adding my success in making fsx run faster from this forum! first my system is as follows:----------------------------------------------------------------------hardware:AMD 5000+ (dual 2.6)BFG 8800gts OC version w/ latest drivers (640mb)4 gigs ram (pc5300)1 raptor 10000rpm 150gig sata hd (dedicated for fsx only)1 western digital 7200rpm 320gig sata hd (all other programs)Sharp Aquos 37inch native 1080p lcd (1900x1080)add ons:FSX SP1Air Nav FS Traffic Live XActive Sky XX Graphicssliders:all sliders are set to 100% except mesh complexity 50%, mesh resolution 50%, and autogen density is ~50%(normal). again, everything else is maxed out or checked including cloud distances.----------------------------------------------------------------------first think I have to say is WOW! this previous config allows me to fly almost anywhere and keep the frame rates from going below 10. even when the frame rates did dip below 10 it is still very "playable", not like single digit frame rates in versions prev to fsx. I am still able to taxi around nyc area, philly area, dc area, with frame rates in the single digits but very playable still. With all the activity going on at these airports, never really notice the diff to be honest with you.anyways, to everyone buying a new system, can't stress enough how my performance went through the roof after the 8800gts was put on board. previously (with my ati 1900xt) I could barely taxi around philly with almost all ai turned off, now I have FS Live traffic X and X graphics making the airport look alive and real, and it is so much smoother. hope this helped some of you. I have to admit, this is the first time I have been playing (any version) flight simulator without being angry about my performance. Quite honestly, until MS makes the autogen textures more realistic, the settings that I have would prob. be the ones I would keep! Regards - Jim

Jim,I went from a 7800GT 256 to the GTS, also, and found the swap well worth while. The sim looks SOOO much better and, as you state, it runs smoother at the same FPS that I had before (21).I'd strongly recommend anyone with a 7000 series GPU with 256MB VRAM to upgrade. If your CPU is half decent, you should see an improvement in overall performance and you can increase your Antialiasing a notch or 2.cheersmitchell

hello again, about the Aquos 1080p native 37inch lcd....it is great when running fsx, but kinda disappointed when doing other things like web, etc... I would of thought at this resolution the text would look a little more "crisp". Overall, though, it really looks great in fsx playing at that high of resolution, the already great textures look even better! In summary, good monitor for gaming, not the best for web/office type programs.
