Internet/router connection question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,I access the internet via a Netgear router connected to a cable modem. If I disable the DHCP Client service on the computer have I in essence disconnected all access to the computer? In other words if I disable the DHCP Client service will it make it impossible for anyone or anything to access that computer. Thanks,George

Hi George,I'm not sure, but I think that disabling the DHCP server will only have an effect when the IP lease period is up and your PC attempts to get a new one. Why would you want to disable this?Bruce.

If you are hard wired, you could right-click on the two monitors in your system tray, open network connections and disable the connection. Reverse to reconnect. My network is all wireless, so I just unplug my usb adapter. Bob

Hi:There is a function in control panel in Network Connections called local area connection that disables your network connection (interent). Right click to create a shortcut and then send to desktop. This frees up some memory and you are safe to shutdown your virus scanner. If you are not flying online or using real world weather this works great and prevents stutters. When done flying just click on the desktop icon after starting your virus scanner and you are back online.RegardsRick

I have AlacrityPC but don't use it 'cause it didn't seem to help much. Maybe I just don't know how to use it. I just looked at the list of services and programs that it shuts down, and can't say that I see anything that will shut down internet. Your DHCP idea might work. Pause FS and see if you can go online. Otherwise go to their support forum. You can do that from the program. Let us know how you do so we can all learn.Bob

Many routers have a firewall in them which should help. Seems best to phisicaly disconnect. That way there is no doubt. I have two rigs, one for FSX, video editing, which doesn't go online much. And one for email and such.Bob
