March 15, 200818 yr I've been having one or two graphic glitches with my current nvid driver so I decided to try the 174.12 as recommended. The set up process seemed to go OK but then my HD failed and I was unable to boot my machine. It seems that the install failed and in the process corrupted the registry system hive. Fortunately I had a back up image of the HD on an external drive and so was able to boot with a recovery disk and reinstall the HD image so all is well. I've got no idea if the problem was caused by the drive installer or by something within my system. Does anyone have any advice before I go thro' the process again with a new copy of the drivers. My operating system is XP Home 32 bit.Bud
March 15, 200818 yr Hi Bud, did you use something like "Driver Sweeper" to clean out the old drivers when you installed? Those utilities can possibly take out wrong registry entries which leads to issues. I have heard of this happening with Driver Sweeper, but I have used Driver Cleaner Pro years without issue. Aside from that, the 174.12's are beta's and I have seen several different modded versions out there - wondering if you got a bad set or even downloaded for the wrong OS - it can be confusing these days with 32bit, 64bit, Vista, XP not to mention Linux etc... Hope it helps.Regards, Kendall#1: [email protected]/Coolermaster HyperTX2 Gigabyte P35-DS3L 4GB Ballistix Tracers PC6400 EVGA 8800GT - 169.28's Seagate 250GB 7200.11 CH Yoke/Pedals/Saitek Throttle Dual Monitor: Dell 2405/1905 #2: Dell 8400 3.2 H.T. 3GB PC4200 - X800XT Diamond Xtreme/Logitech X-530's Regards, Kendall 7800X3D/G.B. Your system can boot even without any video card drivers installed. Windows XP will just load temporary VGA display drivers until you can get permanent drivers installed. Your registry can get corrupted but this is highly unlikely. I once used one of the Guru3D driver cleaner and wiped out all remnant of my display, MediaShield, and PCI System drivers and my system booted up without any problems. I then reinstalled the latest display drivers and MediaShield for my Nvidia 680i SLI motherboard and everything worked without problems. You might check your harddrive and make sure it's not starting to fail.Jim
March 15, 200818 yr Hello JimMany thanks. The HD is actually only three weeks old and is in good shape. I tested it pretty thoroughly to ensure it wasn't something like a boot sector problem. When I restored the back up image, everything was fine. I have no doubt that it was the registry which was corrupted. Eventually I was able to see the blue screen of advice which, originally, had flashed on my monitor for a micro-second - very useful.Bud
March 15, 200818 yr Thanks Kendall. No I didn't clean out first. I got the d/l for my OS but I think you're probably right in that I managed to get a bad set. I've d/l again and will give this another try. Fingers x'd.Bud
