Driver Updates?

Featured Replies

I received the attached email (advertisement) for a program that scans your system and recommends driver updates. I am interested in the motherboard & BIOS, and not the video card.Has anyone had any experience with this or similar programs, and have any recommendations? Thanks a lot,Howard

Hi Howard,I have checked it out but have not purchased a subscription (required if you want them to automatically update your drivers). I have used the program to scan my system (for free) then look at the results to see what drivers require an update. I then go to the driver's manufacturer and download the update. The program will tell you if there's an updated driver for your Intel motherboard and your bios but I don't think it's worth purchasing a subscription to get those updated drivers that you can get for free otherwise. My two-cents worth.Best regards,Jim

tried something like it. Nice for people who don't know what hardware they have and where to get drivers. For people that do it's not worth the money. And for those who could have benefit from it I seriously think it's a bad idea to go messing around with lowlevel drivers, you can do more harm than good if you do so.Case in point, Windows Update put a new 802.11 driver onto my laptop last weekend. After installation I could not connect to any WLAN at all. Had to resort to manually rolling back that driver and installing an older version to get that card back up and running, not something the average user would think of (or be able to do). What made things worse was that it was nearly impossible to find that older driver as the laptop manufacturer didn't provide it through their website, only through their ftp site which can be hard to find (and is only available through some of their regional sites, and of course not the one in my country).
