September 29, 200817 yr Fry's has one advertised for $199. 64Gb would hold an FSX install + quite a few addons. http://www.outpost.com/product/5710922Would this be a better solution than a Raptor?-jk
September 29, 200817 yr as long as you are on a SATAII interface with the right cable, absolutelyDont bother if you do not have true 3GB/s per second support on the motherboard. The drive will help due to no mechanical movement which means FSX goodness but you wont ever see the true ability of the drive on the bussbut 64GB is a very low and can be filled quickly.. all my mesh products are about 50GBAnother thing to... the tech has had some issues and up until the release of the new Intel SSD those issues have been a problem... I would not opt for the Patriot model right now due to the older tech and the price per gig... Give it a few more months and let the dust settle on the tech and the price and it will really be worth the switch at that point.
September 30, 200817 yr I'd be interested. It reports a 170MBs transfer rate, but no latency number. I've tried xfer rates from 100MBs to 300MBs without seeing any difference in FS. But maybe there's something there. Sure hope so. Those SSDs are the only HD hope left.
October 14, 200817 yr According to AnandTech, make sure you do *not* get an SSD with thefollowing nefarious combination:1. With a JMicron controller,2. with Samsung MLC (Multi-Level Cell) NAND flash,... or your I/Os per second could be one third (as in 33%) of aVelociRaptor!Warning: Although this combo seems quite "specific", it actuallyaccounts for most low-cost SSDs!Under certain conditions (high number of random pending writes), youcould get average write latencies of up to 15 seconds with peaks ofup to 30 seconds (as in half a minute)!Chart: http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/storag...h/thisisbad.pngSo meake sure you get a SSD with the Intel controller. Since theyseem hard to find at this point, here's a link to get you started:CDW: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?edc=1568406While it is true that flying in FSX you will like do few if anywriting to your SSD, perhaps tomorrow you might want your SSD toperform well in other uses.Full AnandTech SSD Article, see:http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel...aspx?i=3403&p=8Cheers,- jahman.
October 14, 200817 yr Thanks. I won't be getting one until it has a proven track record of success. Still too many bugs.-jk
