October 23, 200817 yr A few months ago I picked up a new system that came with 4 gigs of Corsair dominator Ram and it came with Vista 32.I just upgraded (yes upgrade lol) to Windows XP SP3. I was wondering if I should run with 3 or 4GB of ram. I see XP does recognize the 3 but from what I've heard it won't take 4 so I have the 4th gig out right now. Should I put it in or not?Oh and anyone who thinks XP will only use 1 gig of ram need not reply, that's complete rubbish lol.

October 23, 200817 yr Thanks Nick!Should /3GB/Userva=2560 be 4GB if you have for Gigs or just leave the 3?
October 24, 200817 yr ok... it only sees 250mbs of that extra gig I just put in :S - I'll just leave it at 3 gigs lol
October 24, 200817 yr >ok... it only sees 250mbs of that extra gig I just put in :S>- I'll just leave it at 3 gigs lol>>Not a good idea...DRAM DIMM modules need to be paired-up to have dual-channel capability...putting in just one of the pair slows your entire memory subsystem way down to single-channel speeds. The reality is that with a 32-bit OS, much of that fourth gig of RAM is masked and unusable by hardware mappings to your video array and various and sundry other devices. But you need to either have 2 or 4 sticks in the machine for dual-channel operation.I think it's a mixed bag on 4GB 32-bit configurations still. If the OS sees 4GB, it schedules it, and that can even cause OOM errors where they would not occur in the same system with only 2GB installed. My advice right now is 2GB for a 32-bit operating system, more only in a 64-bit system. I'm on Vista 64 now, and it's just tearing it up witn 4GB. Best $200 I've spent in years.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
October 24, 200817 yr >ok... it only sees 250mbs of that extra gig I just put in :S>- I'll just leave it at 3 gigs lol>>/3GB/Userva=2560 is the correct edit and you must be on FSX SP2 or the app wont use the memorythe 2560 may need to be tweaked if OOM errors still occur.. that value can be lowered by 60 and retested for stability.or the FSX RTM/SP1 ( or FS9) exe file MUST be marked to use >2GB manually with special softwareThe OS edit allows the address space to be expanded so you can use more than 2GB without crashing. The application must be marked for >2GB use (FSX SP2 is) or the addition is worthless to the appYou are better off on 2x2GB than 3x1GB or any other combination due to timing changes and lack of dual channel operation as was suggestedA 64bit OS is a better platform than a 32bit for using more than 2GB however up to about 3.2GB will be in play as long as the APPLICATIOn and OS are marked ...
