March 23, 200620 yr Hello,I have created a livery for my VA and I am running into a problem with the tail. The texture of the tail appears blurry from time to time.I use Adobe photoshop 7 and I transferred a gif or jpeg onto the PSD.Now in FS9, sometimes the tail is blurry and sometimes it's not. I don't get it. I heard about the mips and stuff, I used DXTBMP to take them out but I don't know if it worked. Here is what it says in the botom of the window:512x512 0 Mips 32 Bit 888(8Bit Alpha) Extended BitmapAny help is greatly appreciated Thank you.The plane is the PMDG 737-600 btw.
March 23, 200620 yr Commercial Member I've noticed that sometimes when I save a texture with imagetool where the alpha channel is present, but only white or a very light gray, imagetool will discard the alpha channel and save the .bmp without it. The total absence of an alpha channel causes the textures to be blurry on my system. I've never used DXTBmp, so I can't verify whether or not it works the same way.My "workaround" for the problem is to open the .bmp in Photoshop and select a small area in the corner of the .bmp outside of the actual texture artwork, switch to the alpha channel (add one if necessary) and fill the selected area with black or dark gray. I then save in Photoshop preserving the alpha channel and re-open in imagetool for the final conversion/save. Imagetool will now detect and save the alpha channel, and the blurrieness goes away.Best wishes,Jim
March 23, 200620 yr I generally save my textures to DXT 3 format in DXTBMP with the mipmapping turned off. The only time I've ever had blurry problems is with the mipmapping turned on.Never had a problem with DXTBMP dropping alpha masks.Cheers,PD
March 24, 200620 yr Thank you for your advice. After I had reformatted the bitmap with Imagetool and saved it in 32 bits, it would appear as though it was also applying mipmaps. Now I am not positive but that's the only conclusion I can come to...I reopened the bitmap with DXTbmp and sure enough, it was showing mip levels 9... I extracted them and saved the bitmap with DXTBMP and haven't had the problem again so far...Thank you
