June 17, 200718 yr I'm trying to repaint the Eaglesoft CJ1 for FSX, and am having problems when it comes to displaying the texture in FS (see pic). I've copied one of the paints that came with the plane (texture.5) and replaced the escj1_fuse_t.dds with my own.The texture was created in Paintshop Pro, using Eaglesoft's paint kit, inverted and loaded into DTXBMP, along with the alpha. I've saved as DDS DXT5, DDS DXT3, with and without mips, but no difference.I also tried loading the original texture (having made a backup ) into DXTBMP and saving it, and the same happens! So I guess the problem is something I'm (not) doing in DXTBMP?Any help gratefully exceeded :-) Tim (rapidly pulling my hair out!)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/173930.jpg
June 18, 200718 yr Tim, I've been shorting brain cells trying to work this stuff out with the FSX default Cessna.. and I gave up for the time being :)I was trying out the bump mapping etc.. and nothing was happening. Then I managed to blank all of the Cessna schemes somehow.. However I did come across this when there was a lack of alpha channel, see if thats a possible cause :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 18, 200718 yr Author According to Chris Brisland in another forum, dxtbmp produced dds files simply don't work in FSX. Since ImageTool kills my PC stone dead (it is a few years old!), I guess I need a new PC to finish this paint. x(
June 18, 200718 yr Interesting, I've been using DXTBmp.. so maybe I'm not going mad after all :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 18, 200718 yr "dxtbmp produced dds files simply don't work in FSX."This statement is incorrect. All one has to do to learn all there is to know about any aircraft texture files is drop over to Martin Wright's forum and ask him -- or simply read the answers already posted there. Martin Wright is the author of FREE DXTbmp. http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/I have done many FSX repaints converting to DDS DXT5 WITH MIPMAPS using FREE DXTbmp. As always, thanks to Martin for this great program and all the support he continues to give us.The see-through black in your screenshot indicates to me when the edited BMP was loaded into DXTbmp the default BLACK alpha may have been loaded with it. Select New Alpha or check it is not black. Perhaps the file was (S)aved as DDS DXT5 but DID NOT include Mips. Make sure the mipmap box IS CHECKED.REMEMBER: Many posts are made regarding FSX aircraft textures and many are apples and oranges. Be certain when discussing DDS file, the replies are NOT talking about Extended Bitmap DXT files. Both are handled differently by FSX but both will work.Quoted from Martin Wright's ForumSubject: MS FSX texture filesName: MartinDate Posted: Oct 21, 06 - 8:13 PMMessage: Most important thing is to include mipmaps. FSX won`t display aircraft DDS textures unless they contain mips. This may upset a lot of repainters as they have spent the last couple of years removing mipmaps to improve appearanceN.B. The above was Martin Wright's response to DDS DXT5, FSX files

It seems this default black alpha doesn't get displayed in dxtbmp, but gets saved with the file. It is not sufficient to load the replacement alpha over the top of the existing one - that' won't get rid of the "default black", and you end up with what's in my first post, whether mips are selected or not. Only if you first select "New alpha", and THEN load the saved alpha file does it work! Thanks for the heads up re. Martin's forum; I'll be sure to check it out (never noticed it was there before on visiting his site)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/173962.jpgNow to finish the job! LOL!Tim (slightly balder, but wiser!)
