February 13, 200323 yr Because EHAM eventually wants to grow towards 800.000 flight movements per year. Today they're at approx. 400.000They just want to maintain their position as one of the main hubs in Europe next to Heathrow, Frankfurt and CDG.EHAM has a very specific hub function: only 20% of the travellers have NL as their destination. With EGLL those figures most probably are different. And indeed, also the noise restrictions play a significant role, but also the serious threats of KLM leaving EHAM as their homebase if EHAM didn't expand. There was a huge discussion on the possible closure of EHAM where it is today and rebuild a totally new one in the North Sea on a new piece of land-to-be-created or have a second EHAM built there.I guess this discussion will continue for the next decades....Anyway, #6 is now open and #7 is on it's way....G.
