I7 940 Overclock Reviews

Recommended Posts

Guest JimBrown

Hello again,A few weeks ago, I posted a message listing components for a core i7 system I was considering. At the time, I mentioned that I was not particularly interested in overclocking.Well, things change. I've been doing a lot (that is an understatement) of reading since then. I even played with overclocking my ancient P4 3.2 system for a bit. Yup, taught myself quite a bit.In that original post, I listed a core i7 940. Now that I'm ready to overclock whatever system I end up with, I'm wondering if the 940 is worth the extra dollars. The problem is that I can't find any info out on the world wild web about overclocking the 940. Everyone is talking about the 920. (And a few are talking about the 965, but that's out of my price range.)Pretty much all the i7 reviews I've seen use prerelease engineering samples of the 920 and the 965, and then interpolate the 940 results by downclocking the 965. What I'm looking for is real world overclocking results using an actual 940.Does anyone have any links to such information?Much thanks,...jim

I have read in a few places that people are able to get it to 3.9 - 4.2 without much fuss. I certainly hope so as I am going the 940 route.

Articles specifically about oc'ing the i940 seem a bit hard to find at this stage. Mostly stuff in tech forums like:http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3438419http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=5849If these guys are getting it up to 4.4GHz stable you can be sure you gonna see nice results in the 3.6 to 4 range. As so much depends on MHz with FSX every little bit helps! Some extra info:http://techreport.com/articles.x/16044

What happened with the early reports that the 920 and 940 would throttle back if overclocked ?Wasn't it Tom's hardware that reported that?
