FSX Gamespy Solution - How To

Recommended Posts

FSX GameSpy solution: How-ToWe realize the way to fix the multi-player issues with FSX and GameSpy.If everyone creating and running servers follows the following advice the problems will all but go away. We run a popular group with over 66 nations involved. We have hosted hundreds of sessions and this works. The problem:When logging into a GameSpy it very often gives the message that you may have logged on from another computer. This can result in having to attempt login several times before you can get connected. A real pain. The Cause:By default, GameSpy puts all new logins in the Free Flight lobby. Also, most of the session servers are also there. Because of this, this lobby is extremely over populated. With set limits of how many logins are allowed in each lobby the result is the system constantly trying to make room for all the logged in users. It will reject a connection simply because there is no room for it. Or, it will kick someone else to make room. While there are hundreds of people active in Free Flight lobby, several other lobby's are empty. All though we do not know the exact policy of how this is done, we have found the solution. The solution:Put your server in the appropriate lobby. We all want our session to be popular and attract new people to join the fun. However, many of the sessions in the Free Flight lobby are locked, or password entry only. This suggests a group has a server and only those involved have the keys. If these locked servers, or any other servers for that matter, were put in a lobby that is more descriptive of the activities involved the main default lobby (Free Flight) would be less populated therefore allowing more room for logins. You are already running a password, what would it hurt to move it as well? This will benefit your users very much as well as helping everyone as a whole. Distributing the load to these other lobby's which have the same limits as Free Flight we assume. Make sense?FSX will remember that last lobby you used. And upon logging in you will be in that lobby flawlessly each and every time. Try it. So, if you run a Virtual Airline, set up your session there. Bush flying in the Bush Flying lobby. Adventure type session go in Adventures, etc. If we all do this, our multi play activities will be much more enjoyable. All of this is especially effective for the session which are locked or run a password. Because obviously not just anyone can enter. So why not put it in a different and more appropriate lobby so your people can log in easily each time? If you run military type sessions, put them there. And so on.At first, your server will be quiet, but over time as we all adopt this method, people that really enjoy your interests will be able to find you in a pleasing manner and your sessions will be full of like minded users. And more importantly, Gamespy will become more friendly for all. We think the problems will all but vanish.ChattanooganGotBush? - Virtual Back Country Flight Associationwww.gotbush.org

Wanted to bump this, and say something. Hopefully we can get this sticked or get people responding often so people can spread the word and people will not forget.I will definitely go to the right lobby now that this is posted and people have read it. I really hope this helps the gamespy problem, although I have seen games with far more sessions without any problems. So please people read this and promise you will follow. Post you are starting a session in the "Bush Flying, Airliners", etc in the free flight lobby chat for the last time, and people will check there and join. Friends will tell friends that an awesome session is up in a different lobby and they will come in. People will check other lobbies more often when this happens and nobody will be starting in the Free Flight lobby most of the time. If you get a friend request from someone that likes to join your sessions (add is not obnoxious in the session of course), I recommend you accept it, that way you can get many friends and you can all send them in an invite, private chat request, etc. and they will spread the word about your session to their friends, chat lobbies, etc.I think this should get a stick in the FSX forum, or in the FSX Multilayer forum, because this problem needs to be solved. People should not be disconnected from gamespy in the middle of a session and lose all the enjoyment they were having. So please people like the author said. Post your session in the right category. Putting your session in the appropriate lobby will also reduce the amount of people joining and leaving every second, making your session smoother. You might also get less, excuse the word, annoying, people.

From a strickly selfish point of view, I hope this doesnt 'take'. Our group has been flying peacfully in the Adventures lobby for 2 years and we enjoy the peace and quiet there. :(

Exactly, btw, I am not a part of got bush or any other company, online service, etc. Your point is very good, because in other lobbies, you will get the RIGHT people in your session, and have a lot less chance of getting some obnoxious, disrespecting person. (kid or adult)

Quote: 'By default, GameSpy puts all new logins in the Free Flight lobby.' . If that's the case, then maybe you should be talking to GameSpy people. I did not 'get it' what you're trying to do. You say 'we', 'it', 'them', etc. Very vague. Advice to do WHAT to WHOM then?Quote: 'FSX will remember that last lobby you used.' If that's the case, then maybe you should be talking to the FSX people (whoever they are now). You should not blame the simmer who is sooo glad just to be able to be flying online (and does NOT know the ins and outs of all the server, host, client, Lobby, etc. Like me.Quote: '.. our multi play activities will be much more enjoyable. All of this is especially effective for the session which are locked or run a password. Because obviously not just anyone can enter. So why not put it in a different and more appropriate lobby so your people can log in easily each time?'. (Seem like you should follow this advice yourself. Who died and left you in charge?). That's just my opinion. I may be wrong, or out of line, so sorry if I am. But VA and 'special intrest' GROUPS shouldn't be allowed to control things. Got (your own server) bush?Chuck BNapamule
