Strange humming sound from CPU-fan

HiI picked up a upgrade for my computer yesterday.AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black EditionGigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4LKCrucial DDR2 BallistiX TRACER PC6400 4096MBInstallation went fine, both hardware and OS (Vista x64).But after the computer has been on for just a minute or two I get this really annoying sound from what I can locate coming from the CPU fan.Here's a clip which I recorded yesterday:http://www.easy-share.com/1904285839/Inspelning (5).wavI suspect that the fan is broken? =)Johan, ESGP

For testing, disable any CPU Fan speed control or throttling in the BIOS (or software) so that the fan can run full speed (verify RPMs in BIOS too). Also, check your 12v rail in the BIOS (or software) and make sure you're within specs. My thinking is, some fans don't like to be run at slower than designed speeds which in some rare cases, may cause some resonant frequency noises in the bearings. Otherwise, it sounds like a bad fan.

Thanks for the reply! I couldn't fix it either way. However, when I looked through the whole chassi, I found something that now worries me a bit, (I was probably a bit anxious when I assembled my upgrade yesterday! :S) I have only connected a 4-pin cable to the 8-pin ATX 12V power connector. Is it possible that I have caused damage the cpu, mobo, gpu etc?Any input on this is appreciated!A worried simmer for the moment.....

Thanks for the reply! I couldn't fix it either way. No biggie, fans are cheap and they most certainly go bad eventually.As for the cable, I seriously doubt it. One of my pervious MB's had a cap over 4 of the 8 pins in case you didn't have the proper cable from the PSU. If anything it probably would have a created a current-draw issue on the PSU. As long as you didn't let the smoke out (LOL), I personaly would not worry about it.
