Weird finding in O&O Defrag

Recommended Posts

I noticed that a name defrag didn't order files correctly at the beginning of the drive and looking at the report, it showed multiple locked files.streams.jpgApparently these are due to alternate data streams. I downloaded Streams.exe from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897440.aspx and deleted streams from all drives. O&O Defrag now shows all files in name order.

I am aware of AltD's in NTFSI would be cautious with this. Those files were not critical for perf in any way shape or form being moved to the beginning of the drive partitionMore on what the AltDS's are herehttp://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/altds
I had to truncate the results above to save space, since Streams is doing a search of the whole C: drive. Streams also has the parameter "-d" to delete streams, but I don't recommend that you use it unless you are sure of what you are doing.
A much better tool herehttp://www.nirsoft.net/utils/alternate_data_streams.htmlNot something I suggest anyone do unless they really understand what it is they are doing...You can be stripping out information a virus scanner placed in a file.. as well as an entire list of other things you DO NOT want removed!

One other thing ... this is something that may or may not pertain to people depending on the video card.. ======================================================= for those using O&O defrag and seeing visual corruption of the bootime interface, (offline defrag) here is the fix from O&O SoftwareNOTE: For Boot Time visual interface corruption please note this fix from O&O:This problem does happen when our graphics driver is not compatible with your graphics card. Please rename the following file:C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oobctm.syseg. toC:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oobctm.bakThis file is the grahics card driver for O&O Defrag. If the file is not there, the Windows default driver will be used for offline defragmentation instead.Note: Don't open O&O Defrag after you rename the driver, this will cause to reinstall the driver again. Therefore change the settings for the offline defragmentation before.Restart your computer and the offline defragmentation should run. If you can see everything correctly, do the following after Windows is loaded:- close O&O Defrag if it was open- delete the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\oobctm.sys- create a file in this folder with notepad and name it "oobctm.sys" (please take care that the file extensions are correct and are not hidden by Windows explorer)- open O&O Defrag, it should not install the driver again =====================================
