Flight Sim Crashing - can reproduce at will...

Featured Replies

Hi there,I am experiencing a problem with my installation of Flight Simulator. My system details are:

  • FS2004, with 9.1 update,
  • Vista Home Premium SP1 x64 bit,
  • i7 920 CPU (with HyperThreading disabled) and nVidia GeForce 9800GTX+.
  • I run a single-monitor setup - a 24" Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW at 1920x1200 connected using DVI interface.

Basically I have noticed that if I try to "move" any panel, be it the overhead, main, etc... Instantly the screen goes black and I get "Microsoft Flight Simulator has stopped working. Windows is searching for a solution to this problem" (which it does not find), and I have to click close which brings my simming to an abrubt halt!! I was using the nVidia drivers from their web site version 182.50, but in trying to diagnose this problem myself found that these had been superseded to 185.85, which I have now installed but they do not help.I also use nHancer 2.5.1 configured using Nick's guidelines.I am not sure when this started happening I found it by accident when I was starting the APU on my PSS 777, and accidentally moved the mouse as I clicked on the knob on the overhead panel. At first I thought it was a random incident but in subsequent testing I have found that I can reproduce it at will just by trying to drag a panel. It also does this on my 737 PIC and other aircraft (though I havent tried them all).I use many addon aircraft, and addon sceneries so it could be any number of things causing it. I really dont want to have to do a reinstall if I can at all help it as it takes about a week to get FS back with everything installed from scratch!I have googled the problem, but most things I find are related to it CTD'ing on startup and not getting to the main menu even. This is not a problem for me, and I can load and fly a flight okay, so long as I don't move a panel! Sometimes I get the message when I close FS down at the end though - which is also odd... Due to the fact that it's across different aircraft, happens whichever airport I happen to be at, and from reading the various forums found through my google searches I think it sounds like a graphics driver issue, or similar, rather than a configuration or installation issue.I work in IT, and built my computer from scratch, so would like to think I'm fairly competent when it comes to diagnosing problems or issues. But this one has me stumped, and believe me I did not want to post here until I had tried all the obvious stuff.Would any of you wonderful people out there be able to suggest things I can try? Or have any ideas for a solution, or help me in any way with this infuriating problem???Many thanks,

I think you can run an fsx re-install with the 'repair' option.

I would first try deleting the FS9.cfg or renaming it and then restart FS9. You should also take a look at the Event Viewer and see if an error msg was recorded and if a specific .dll was mentioned. That will help you diagnose. Best regards,Jim Young
