July 14, 200916 yr Hello everyone.Subject: Modify a Q6600 IC to get 1333FSB 2.4 to 3.0 GHz, in hardware. Many of the systems have a Mother board / BIOS that Do Not have the option / flexibility to Overclock, Gateway, Dell etc. Recently a number of people asked me if there is anything they can do about it? I started looking on the INet and found some info, but it turned out that some / most was incorrect. I did some research and did some modifications to correct the Errors and this is the end result.Note: While this mod is 100% reversible, if done correctly, it will very likely cancel / void your warranty, and may damage your hardware if not done properly. The mod is simple, but you need some tools and good eye sight and steady hands.Make sure you get new Thermal compound / monkey grease, before you proceed, this mod will increase the power / thermal dissipation and a good thermal transfer is imperative. I would not reuse the old compound. There are two ways you can go about it: 1- Just isolate the 1st pin (BSEL2) above the right notch (with pin 1 lower left, back side), see pic, with a small piece of electrical tape. Put your IC back in, get the compound on top and you are good to go.This is not 100% electrically correct because the actual pin, from the MoBo / connector, will float, but it does seem to work fine in all (5 GateWay, Q6600 systems that I helped with). Do Not connect the 3rd and 1st pin, above the notch, to each other.2- Complete step 1- above, and then add a trace from the 3rd pin above the notch (VCC), to the location on top of the added tape, This will disconnect the 1st pin above the notch and connect the third pin to where the 1st pin used to go.I used some aluminum foil, on a test system and also had some alarm conductive tape that worked fine, or you can use a Trace pen from Radio Shack that will make things much easier, but you have to wait for it to cure, an make sure you put at least 2 layers.Post here if any questions. July 14, 200916 yr Just a quick note: Radio Shack doesn't carry electrically conductive pens anymore, at least not in-store. If you want to attempt this mod, you'll need to order from Newegg or if you have a MicroCenter nearby you can try them.
July 14, 200916 yr Author Hello everyone."….Radio Shack doesn't carry electrically conductive pens anymore,…"That is very possible. They are also available at Fry's, but I would not buy one just for that purpose, they were around $20.00 last I checked. Some Crazy glue, good quality aluminum foil, a trace from a discarded board etc, should work. Just make sure you have a connection after you complete the work. I found that the connection is not needed, just use the tape. The test board I looked at had a good, consistent level, but from the design perspective it's a poor way to do things. TV
