August 1, 200916 yr Hello everyone,I've been flying on vatsim and gamespy a lot more lately and I've noticed that most people know what taxiway they're on, or they're exact location on an airport, no matter what airport they're at. There were a bunch of guys doing hops around little single-runway airports in Switzerland the other day, and they all knew how to taxi around (I'm sure at least some of them had never been to these airports). I don't believe they were looking up airport diagrams online every five minutes to study where they were going next. The GPS doesn't show taxiways. Is there a separate program that can help locate me in an airport while playing? Thanks,Deryl
August 1, 200916 yr There are a few things that will do that, basically all moving maps on which you can zoom right in and see the airport layout in full, although you could actually do a sort of similar thing with the top down view in FS in a new view window, but it's not going to be quite as convenient. The one I use that can do that is part of the display on the ACARS gauge which you can install into your aircraft from Aerosoft's Flight Keeper add-on. There is a review of Flight Keeper in the AVSIM reviews library if you want to know more about it, but I can tell you a lot of people will recommend it, and not just for that ability, including me - I never fly an FS airliner without it, especially since it adds the kind of capability most real airliners actually do possess.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
August 1, 200916 yr In the AVSIM Library, there is a free utility called Airport Chart. It's what I use for navigating around airports I've never been to or am unfamiliar with.Take a look : http://library.avsim.net/search.php?Search...x&Go=Search Carl Hudson Intel i3 550 @ 4.20GHZ on Air with Arctic Freezer Pro 7 / Arctic Silver 5 - 4Gb Corsair XMS 3 - GIgabyte H55M-UD2H Motherboard - Asus GeForce GTX280OC 1Gb
August 1, 200916 yr Airport charts are what you need so you can tell what taxiway to take. It can be daunting at first on VATSIM and you are not the only one :)For the US, you can get the terminal procedure charts for any airport in the United States here for free in PDF form: http://naco.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=naco/online/d_tpp The one you need is the airport chart that will have taxiways. For the rest of the world, visit here for a lot of information as to where to go: http://usa-w.vatsim.net/charts and pick the country. That will link to similar services.Note that for some airports in the FSX world, not all the recent changes you will find to current charts may be reflected. Most centers on VATSIM will provide charts used for their airports in this case. Also, if you intend to do IFR online, study departure and approaches (ie, print them) as they are normally enforced, and your friendly ground controller will check for these key waypoints on your flight plan before granting you clearance. Before I was an student ATC on VATSIM to learn about this stuff, I was very politely told that my first flight plan (auto generated by FS) was entirely unacceptable, and I received very polite instructions, and even received the correct flight plan for my route.Hope this helps,
