PC Freeze

Featured Replies

Hi All,I searched this forum, and what seems to be the entire internet for answers to my issue, however I have had no success. I rate myself a 3 or a 4 on a scale of 1-10 on PC prowess. Usually I can Google or Bing myself to a solution, but this is not the case. Any, here goes:First, stats (nothing ever overclocked):ASUS P5N-D moboQ96508GB DDR2 PC6700 (4 modules of 2GB)ITB HDDEVGA GTX275Vista Ultimate 64Antec 750W PSU (672W available on 12V rail)Zalman heat sink and fan.So the issue is when running FSX in full screen, my comp freezes. No sound, no reaction from mouse or keyboard inputs. RMA'd new video card, no help. New HDD, no help. New PSU, no help. CPU temps idle at 35-40C (depends on what program is reporting) and under load showing no more than 55-58C. Memory is what I am leading to. I noted that during one of the freezes, all 4 DIMMs were very hot. It can be noted that the PC will freeze within 2 minutes of the game being started, or 1 hour. I cant see the CPU temps during the freeze in real time, but they ran at the above temps using PRIME95 without too many issues. As I mentioned above, nothing was or is ever overclocked. I do have an open case, so I am wondering if cooling is really the issue here. I didnt freeze outside of FSX (freezes in full screen or windowed mode) until today, when the comp. froze while viewing CPU-Z. Subsequently after that, I couldnt get past POST without clearing the BIOS. Anyhow, Im out of ideas, so I leave it to the experts. I hope I left enough info for some educated guesses. Thanks in advance for the help.Allan [email protected]

Take two of the four DIMMs out (making sure you still leave the remaining two in correct slots for dual channel), and see what happens. If your memory is overheating, having only two DIMMs should be cool enough to see if that is the issue.

This is likely a question for the hardware forum more than FSX.Some suggestions (in no particular order):- from what you write, it looks like you overclock. Does this happen at stock speeds/voltages? Is there anything in the logs as to what caused the crash? It took me a month to get my 9650 to behave at 4GHz and what you describe is quite familiar. Note that some motherboards can't handle overclocking with all memory slots filled - something about latching cannot be sustained. I have 2x2Gb in mine only.- does this happen in windowed mode or only full screen mode? Have you tried different video drivers and resolutions? - if you clear your FSX.CFG, does it still crash (this will reset options to defaults) - make a backup of the file first. The folks in the hardware forum may have more ideas.Cheers,

Etienne,You are correct, this was placed in the wrong forum. I certainly apologize for that. However, the issue was resolved. It was due to cooling, or lack thereof. An open case may be good for some, but I am not one of them. My case doesnt really support good airflow when closed (it only has 4 badly placed 80MM fans, so I chose to keep it open for the past year. I supposed with the new GTX275 and Q9650, theres just too much heat and not enough airflow. Placing a small deskfan and blasting the mobo seems to keep everything cool and working as advertised. As I mentioned earlier, I do not overclock anything (I love warranties) so this baffled me beyond. I thank everyone for their help.
