FSX and VFR sceneries

Featured Replies

I have been thinking about getting some VFR scenery products for Europe, as they look incredibly good in pictures. But I see that many of these products have no seasonal variations :( For those of you who have such VFR sceneries, do you not miss the changing of the seasons? Why not just use UTX/GEX?ThanksMichael

Hi Folks

For those of you who have such VFR sceneries, do you not miss the changing of the seasons?
Yes Michael :( but tolerable.
Why not just use UTX/GEX?
Because UTX/GEX are just fantasy interpretations, using repeating "wallpaper" to pattern the terrain, and bearing little and often no resemblance whatsoever to reality. :( CaveatIf you fly big ironand spend your time at > FL350then VFR sceneries may be of little benefit. However the clue is in the naming,if you fly low-level VFRthen see the 5 Horizon links at the bottom of this post.and compare those with UTX/GEX.HTHATBPaul

Hi,If you want photoscenery with seasonal variation check this out:http://earthsimulations.com/information.htmlYou get five seasons, the normal four plus Hard Wimter (January). It is not only the colour of the vegetation that changes, all the autogen alters with the season. For example, animated farm machinery crop spraying in spring then combinigg in late summer etc.

basys:I almost only fly regional turboprops, so im kinda in between :( I guess one could have a situation, where its summer in your photosecenery, but winter at your addon airport sceneries? :( The links you refer to are for VFR Generation X right? Looks fantastic!roddymod:I already bought Alderney Island and you are right: Brilliant work! Stunning! :( ThanksMichael

Only problem is, it takes about 30 seconds to fly over it... And no matter how well it is made, FSX 3D-buildings always look NOT real to me...I own VFR GenX (England and Wales) and even though it has its drawbacks (perspective is 'burned' into the textures, so things may look weird when you are flying from the 'wrong' direction and indeed no season changes) I love it. Well, maybe I should say I hate generic textures... I just can't stand the repetition and how awfully roads and waters run right through buildings and whatever. I've had lots of fun with FTX, which is the best generic texture addon out there, but in the end the repetitive textures and the roads (and waters etc) cutting right through houses and so on, really started to annoy me. It's just not real at all. It's completely fake. When I fly above VFR GenX (at something like 3500 to 4500 feet) everything seems quite real (flat as it is). There is ZERO repetition. Roads are where they are supposed to be and the never ever run through houses or anything. It's all as it should be and to me it gives the most realistic experience you can get with FSX.BTW I do have freeware airfields installed in VFR GenX and also a lot of autogen trees, which do give some depth and perspective, but that's mainly nice when you are taking off or landing, because otherwise everything is way too flat. But as soon as I am up in the air, I like it more without any autogen. Again, it's a shame high buildings don't stick out as they should, but the overall effect is great (at a certain height) but I mainly like it that there is NO repetition AT ALL and what you see is exactly how it is in real life. No generic addon can beat that, no matter how 'realistic' it may look at first sight.

Well, er... I just couldn't help myself and bought Alderny too... It's small indeed, very small, but absolutely awesome too...! :( So forget (and pardon) my remark about unrealistic 3D-buildings and that you can fly over it in 30 seconds... Well, I suppose you can, but you'd be very stupid to do so. I've never been really that interested in various seasons because I usually only fly in summertime, but wow, with this island I will surely fly during other seasons too! This is really THE perfect scenery for having a very realistic short flight, as you would around your hometown airfield. I know people who only fly around their hometown airfield and they never get tired of it. I though this island was too small too have some real fun, but boy, I was wrong. This will be my home for some time to come! It's really stunning. Pity it's so small, but man, does it look good...!
