Potential new buyer - visibility related question

Featured Replies

Hi,I am contemplating buying ASA as I am moving away from REX's weather problems due to issues with visibility. What I wanted to ask is how ASA handles North-American 10sm METAR readings? 10sm vis on METARs in the US does not mean 10 sm visibility - which is depicted in FSX as near foglike - but significantly better, in a sense anything above 10sm. There are no 9999 readings there as in Europe. Unfortunately REX depicts 10 sm METAR as 10 sm visibility everywhere. Even IVAO weather now realiyed this problem and in the next edition they are changing Nort American 10 sm vis to similar what is depicted for 9999 vis in Europe. How does ASA handle this issue? How is visibility smoothing done? Is there a max surface visibility setting? Thanks for any answers that could help my buying decision,Cheers,Alex

Hi Alex,10SM visibility in ASA does not create near foglike conditions in FSX. It is like the 9999m in Europe.Yes, there is a max surface visibility and a max upper visibility slider. Not sure what you mean about how vis. smoothing is done, so I won't attempt an answer. Thanks for your interest!

Thanks, good news about the 10sm equalling 9999 in North America. Visibility smoothing is the increase of visibility as you take off towards the more upprt layers. REX sets equal intervals of increasisng visibility, eg. surface vis is 20 sm while above FL80 it is 50 sm so every 2000' or so up you get 10sm more visibility. This is set by the weather engine and gives you a very smooth experience as visibility gradually increases as you gain altitude. Just wanted to know how this is treated - if at all - in ASA. is there some vis graduation or you just change abruptly from lower visibility around the surface to high vis in the upper layers. Thanks for your appreciated answer,Alex

Hi,No, there is no step visibility. Thanks!
