Auto-Orienting 3D Textures in FS9 Scenery

Featured Replies

Hello Simmers!I am designing some buildings as well as some other bush scenery using GMAX. No problems with the 3D buildings and texture mapping, however, I would like to add some animals for a little more realism. I was thinking that the easiest way to add an animal image into my scenery would be to simply export a double sided "flat-plane-object" from GMAX along with a texture map of the picture of the animal, (a bear in my case), with an alpha channel. This all works fine but, in addition to this, I would like to force the textured image to orient itself so that it is always facing the viewer despite the viewers orientation inside the scenery. I know that this "auto-rotation" towards the viewer can be easily done with an *.FX file, however, I can't seem to figure out how to get my 3D textured image of a bear to stay oriented to always face the viewer as there is no option to do this in the exported XML file. I'm wondering if it has to be implemented in the *.mdl file and then exported as an animation from GMAX.I know there is definitely a technique to accomplish this but I have not been able to find any information on it despite doing an intensive search on google. If someone could point me in the right direction as to the technique for adding automatic oriented, (for lack of the proper term), images into the sim, I would be most grateful! :( Cheers and, thanks!Mark

I am no expert on this but check out the mdl_tweaker program from the FSDeveloper site. And the scenery "heavy weights" hang out in their forums so you might inquire there also.

Hello David,Thanks for the reply. FS Developer is a great site indeed! I will certainly check out the Model Tweaker. This was the first place that I checked for this information. They are all very knowledgeable over there. I did a massive search for this particular topic using many different key-word-search algorithms on their site and was not able to find any information to help me with my scenery problem. I am open to anyone who has any ideas. Cheers,Mark

Hello again David,I have checked out the Model Tweaker program that you advised me on earlier. It is a great tool! Thanks again for the info.I also found out why I could not locate any posts regarding "auto-rotating objects". The proper term is referred to as "Rotate To Aircraft". When I entered that particular search term, I got some helpful posts. To those who may wonder, this is a function which has to be hard coded into the assembly language file which is optionally dumped with the output of the "makemdl.exe" program upon the compilation of the *.GMAX file --> *.MDL file. The actual source code required to implement this function is posted at FSDeveloper. The modified source code is then re-compiled using another program called BGLC_9.exe to render a new *.MDL file with the implemented changes to the file.I hope this helps any others who may have wondered how this mod was done. FS Developer website has a very helpful and knowledgeable team of developers! Many thanks to them all for their helpful posts!!Cheers,Mark
