Megascenery SOCAL

Featured Replies

I've just purchased MS Socal. It's a very nice piece of software and a big improvement over the FS9 version. (18,000 square miles at 1 foot per pixel)Unlike MSEarth products, you really get what you've paid for (4 DVDs, good charts and other printed maps).I love it but....I can't get my A2A Cub to land on water and am fed up with Heidi screaming. Is it just me or do you guys experience the same problem? (not with Heidi, with the water!!)Here is a quote from Megascenery FAQ:What about bodies of water? Can I land my float plane? This is another feature that sets MegaScenery apart from other photorealistic scenery. Again using a proprietary technique, all bodies of water in the satellite image, are carved out to precision and replaced with water that Flight Simulator recognizes as water. Therefore meaning that you can experience landing your float plane in all bodies of water and at the same time experience Flight Simulator's water effects.

David, that FAQ unfortunately applies to Megascenery, not Megascenery X. Here is a quote from the developer back in 2007 to that same question about So Cal Megascenery XWe had to make a hard decision - to render every large water body with water effects (and therefore make them landable) and which cover up the natural color of the water, or leave the water without effects so that you see a whole variety of water in its natural setting. We decided to make just one version of MSX SoCal - with hardly any inland water. The reasoning was simple - it would take too much time to "cut-out" lakes by hand at 1 m resolution for the entire SoCal area - even if it were done just for "large" water bodies. We had to do it for the coast and bays, and this alone contributed a great deal of time to the production of the title. Some inland dams do have water effects, because they were quite large and blue, and some of them needed terrain mesh flattening - but we generally left the brown and green water alone. We think it lends realism to the scenery, rather than having default FSX water colors everywhere.Hope this helps,Brian S
