'Oh no!' I hear you say, 'not another sub-par computer owner complaining that a very detailed aircraft won't run well on his system!' Well actually it's an i7 system so if you have anything to offer on this subject, be my guest a read on.I previously doubted myself after seeing the results of a GTX260 in FSX, and turned to these forums where I was very kindly pointed in the direction of NickN's post on FSX ans OS optimisation. What a life saver! I'm hoping that the same generosity and expertise can be applied in this situation. Basically, as you will have gained from the little flash back/chat up line, I've got the system running wonderfully with every other aircraft in scenery. However, the J41 is a different story. I'm lucky to get beyond, say 13 FPS, where ever I am. And I know after reading NickN's wonderful post that it's not all about the numbers, but how the game plays, but in this case it doesn't play to a degree where it can be enjoyed. The videos pre-release of the J41 showing us previews state that the resolution is 1600*1200 and recording with 30 FPS. To be recording with 30 FPS with such an aircraft is a miracle. If anyone knows that guy's spec's, then please, enlighten me. Anyway if no solution can be found I'm now seriously considering upgrading to a GTX285. And don't start with the 'It's not about the graphics card it's about the CPU' since, in this case, the CPU is powerful enough already for the system to benefit from a graphics card update :).Help appreciated.Cheers,Andrew.

Andrew,Have you tuned down the settings in the Configurator? If not - try these settings:The Core i7 OC:ed to 4GHz or a i7-975 with low latency memory and an OC:ed GTX 285 is a high end system.A i7 920 @2.6GHz with a GTX 260 is a mid range system.Fps is not important. Smooth flying is important.

Ulf,Thank you for the fast reply. I have tried your settings and they do bring an imporvment which I will be able to put up with, however I think I will still be going for the 285 if there's nothing else that can be done. Cheers,Andrew

The memory bandwidth for the GTX 260 is 111.9 GB/sec. GTX 285 handles 159.0 GB/sec. An pre OC:ed GTX 285 should get you a smoother flight in FSX. I upgraded to the GTX 285 from a 8800GTX and experienced a 25% performance increase in dense urban areas (London). The 8800 GTX has a memory bandwidth of 86.4 GB/sec. Have you OC:ed your i7? What RAM do you use?

Hi there,Processor was previously overclocked at 3.8GHz but by complicated ways having it on stock is actually faster. I shall explain. For some reason my RAM doesn't run at full speed by default. I have 6GB Patriot Viper DDR3 1600MHz. They have preset XMP profiles which have to be activated in the bios. However this resets the Base Clock to 133. Therefore, if I overclock the processor after setting the XMP the RAM will undesireably overclock too. To counter this, I could have loaded the XMP, set the RAM Multiplier to x8, and then took the base clock to 200, giving me 4.2GHz on the Processor and 1600MHz on the RAM, However, heat is a limiting factor for me due to a poor cooling setup.Using the above method, by changing the RAM multiplier I could take the CPU to 3.8 without exceeding 1600MHz, however, that wasn't as fast as stock processor with XMP timing, surprisingly.

Why not set the RAM timings manually in BIOS?

I looked and thought 'That's too complicated' lol. I'll go and look now that you've mentoined it.

Heya Andrew,Let me know how the 285 works out. I am VERY curious to know if corei7 users upgrading from the 260 will see any improvement in FSX. It is a lot of money to spend on a video card especially when you already own a 260.
