September 29, 200916 yr I use a lot of add-ons, GEX, UTX, REX to name a few.I see the OZX Tuscany scenery (which looks AMAZING) requires SP2, and I've never upgraded to it, as I've been advised it isn't worth the hassle for me.If I remember right SP2 improves things like multiplayer, dual-core usage... not sure what else, but none of those apply to me.Do you guys think it would be worth doing a fresh FSX vanilla, the SPs, all three add-ons, all the tweaking of each add-on, and all the other hassles associated with it, just to get the new Tuscany scenery? Are there other awesome freeware sceneries out there that require SP2?Should I try it without SP2 and see if there is really any problem?Help me decide. I am crushing under the weight of just thinking about the work required to upgrade.
September 29, 200916 yr Most new addons are designed for SP2, simply install it, no need to start from scratch.
September 29, 200916 yr I was under the impression that add-ons were always installed after service packs.Could going to SP2 cause problems with add-ons already installed?
September 29, 200916 yr I installed sp2 after running sp1 since it was first released. I just did the install and did a post-install file compare to my sp1 files (backed up) and saw no reason for concern. The only thing that might be an issue (hasn't been for me) is that sp2 will install an additional simconnect (they are cumulative not replacements) and that may affect some addon if it tries to use an old simconnect. In my case I had one app which used to complain about not finding sp2 simconnect (seemed to run OK anyway using sp1) and now that problem has gone away.Aside from the DX10 stuff, the main things that sp2 changes are the main dll files that fsx uses, and many of the default aircraft mdl files are replaced (a couple gauges too). If you use the sdk, you have to update that as well or the parts that run as modules (like traffictoolbox) won't run.I haven't let fsx build a new fsx.cfg, though I might try that just to see if it makes any difference. I know some of the sp1 tweaks like smallpartrejectradius are ignored in sp2 fsx.cfg.scott s..
September 29, 200916 yr I'll go ahead and update to SP2 then. I can't wait to try out that Tuscany scenery! Are there any improvements with performance or new options I should be looking for after going to SP2?
September 30, 200916 yr Had my first OOM running sp2 today. Never had one in sp1 :( This was with the new PMDG J41.scott s..
September 30, 200916 yr I have had enormous issues in stability and performance with my old FSX install. This was basically a couple of years old with FSX-addons-more addons-SP1-addons-SP2-addons-deinstall SP2 to install acceleratorpack-addons....Since I now had huge issues, some with addons, other with FSX itself, I uninstalled and reinstalled FSX-Acc pack-general scenery addons-specific scenery addons-aircraft and rest addons. Now, it runs fluid, no stability issues and generally 5-20 fps faster, depending on where/when/what I fly.In my opinion, FSX is picky when it comes to the order and amount of installs of both its core updates and 3rd party addons.
September 30, 200916 yr ^^^ Yeah, that's exactly what I heard. So far I don't see any problems, and I just went to SP2, keeping UTX, GEX, and REX installed. Can't say about the framerate yet, as I have been messing with AI traffic and trying some freeware scenery, which both change my frames drastically.Need to do a nice normal flight with a default plane and heavy AI traffic, like I was running before SP2, and compare.Just defragged after SP2 also, so hopefully that got me a few frames back. It had been a couple weeks at least.
