Avenger "ARM" switch

Featured Replies

With the new TBM Avenger CTD fix, I am now starting to fly the Avenger again & have tried some carrier flying. I am having a problem with the COP Carrier Catapult & Catapult Gauge in that when the Avenger is properly positioned at the catapult on the Langley carrier. I cannot get the "ARM" switch to turn green & am unable to activate the switch. This happens on flights I create using the Langley carrier. If I go to the "fish on the cat" flight from the MAAM-Sim Avenger Flights, the switch works properly.I used to be able to use the catapult on the Langley on flights I would create & save but since I have just started flying the Avenger again I have not been able to "ARM" the catapult. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this. Thanks,Bob Anderson

Hi Bob,I'm away from home and FS at the moment, but I'll check it out when I return, next week. In the meantime, please let us know if you figure it out.

Hi Bob,Sorry I forgot about this until Fred kindly served as my memory..Just tried creating a flight with the Langley and after slewing into position over the cat marks I had no problem getting a green light and arming. I can only suggest that you make certain you are positioned over the marks - it's a pretty small rectangle. I use the overhead view and slew into position, which I imagine you do too? If the Fish on the Cat flight is working for you, it seems like it ought to work when you set it up by hand, as well, and I don;t really know what else to suggest. If you want to try a complete re-install, shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you a link for the latest version of the package.Good luck.

Hi Bill,Unfortunately I have not been able to improve on my problem of not getting a green light and arming on a carrier flight I have created with the Langley. I have tried slewing using a top view & also have positioned the Avenger & have taxied slowly onto the cat marks & the put on the parking brakes to hold in proper position. A condition I have noticed, is that with the carrier headed into the wind, it has a tendency to blow the Avenger back away from the cat marks very slowly, even with the parking brake on. It is difficult to get it to stay in the proper position on the cat marks long enough to prepare for the catapult launch. Are the winds possibly too strong? For some reason, I don't have this problem with the "Fish on the Cat" flight. Will have to ck the winds again, but I have been able to be catapulted & climb wo/crashing so there have been some winds over the deck. Thanks for your reply,Bob

Aggravating! Yes, I've noticed the wind effect before myself. It's set at 24 knots for F on the C and if you boost the sim rate way up you can see it slowly creeping backward, but it takes a long time for her to be blown out of the box. In fact, I think this wind creep is why I enlarged the cat box to its present size.In addition to being in the box, you must be within 3 degrees of the cat direction, as well. But I imagine that is not the problem, either as it gives you six degrees to play with. I doubt that either the wind or your angle is the culprit though, as the box really is quite large. Here's how you can see that for yourself, if you did not catch it in the User's Manual...With the overhead view on hit shift 5 to bring up the electrical control panel with the arming light and switch on them. Slew the plane slowly around the area of the cat. You should not lose your green light until you are way off the marks. Try this in a self-setup flight on the carrier and see if you can get a green light when in the cat box. When you try to set up a flight and don't get a green, have you checked the HUD to see that it is listing the Langley at the top? If it does not, try reloading the plane by hitting Alt, A, A, Enter. This is supposed to make it recognize the carrier. All the docs for the COP system are included in the Avenger package. Look in your FS9 directory COP\Gauges\rcb-miljet\Documentation COP V2.0. Everything I know about the system came out of those docs and it was adapted for use in the User's Manual.COP is not our program, of course, but it was included with the permission of the authors. If all else fails, try shooting off a query to Bob Barendregt. I'm anxious to hear what you discover.

Hi Bill,I tried the following"With the overhead view on hit shift 5 to bring up the electrical control panel with the arming light and switch on them. Slew the plane slowly around the area of the cat. You should not lose your green light until you are way off the marks. Try this in a self-setup flight on the carrier and see if you can get a green light when in the cat box".I was unable to get a green light with the plane slewed exactly into the box & slewing around the box area. I even reduced the wind so it wouldn't blow the plane back out of the box. "When you try to set up a flight and don't get a green, have you checked the HUD to see that it is listing the Langley at the top? If it does not, try reloading the plane by hitting Alt, A, A, Enter. This is supposed to make it recognize the carrier.""Langley" was listed at the top of the HUD.I was wondering if I should try a reinstall but since since I am able to get a green light & achieve a catapult shot on the "Fish on the Cat" Flight I question the need of a reinstall. The funny thing, is that shortly after I installed the Avenger & I set up the flight on the Langley in Puget Sound, I was able to make a catapult shot with the green light operative. I don't know what has changed. Do you recommend a reinstall? I will also do further checking into the Docs for the COP system.Regards,Bob

Hi Bob,It just doesn't make sense, does it? Have you tried starting from the F on the C, doing the look-down and slew around with the Tarpon to see the boundaries of the cat box with the green/red light? I'm not even sure what we are looking for, but it would be interesting to see what results you get. Also, you might try downloading one of the repositioned Langley add-ons which include modified cat zone ini files and see if you get a different outcome. EDIT: OK, after re-reading your post I see you have tried the Puget Sound positioned carrier. Are you getting negative results in both that one and the default position?I don't see what harm there would be in a re-install. But rather than re-install the whole TBM package, here is a zip of just the COP files. http://www.fssupport.com/maam/COP.zip You can just open the zip and drag all the folders into your main FS directory. Or, it might be useful to replace them file by file to see if there are any differences or AWOL files. Is anyone else out there having Bob's problem?

Hi Bill,FYI, I finally have some positive info to report to you. After rechecking everything including all the carrier sceneries, discovering that some of the sceneries did not have the dsd arrestor & catapult zones installed & missing your suggestion of using "Alt, A, A, Enter" to get the proper "Langley" listing at the top of the hud, I ran across it in the Manual, I found that when I saved a flight on the carrier & had the proper "Langley" listing at the top of the hud, when I came back & reloaded the flight it instead would show "zone undefined" & then could not get a green light to achieve a catapult.I have installed all of the Langley carrier locations & have been able to catapult & achieve an arrested landing on all of them. I have found that I can be catapulted, go around the carrier downwind & make an arrested landing & configure again for takeoff & taxi up to the catapult boxes again, achieve the green light & be catapulted as one exercise. I am starting to re-enjoy the Avenger & the carriers again.I also made the change to the panel gauge files & am enjoying the sounds for the first time. I read about them in the manual but had never heard them before.Anyway, thanks Bill for all of your suggestions & help. I am sorry I wasn't swifter in picking up your one suggestion that helped me the most. This Avenger is right up there with the B-25 & R4D-6 & the carrier scenery makes it even better. All the best,Bob
