FSX sound packs in FS2004?

Featured Replies

Sorry for the multiple post but I tried this in the FS2004 section and got no responses - perhaps folks who know something about the guts of FS9 and FSX are more likely to hang out here...Hi folks,Can somebody tell me the difference between (user aircraft) sound configuration in FSX and FS2004?Specifically, I'd like to know if it is possible to use a soundpack made especially for FSX (the new IRIS BAe146 in this case) in FS2004 - either with or without some modification of the sound.cfg file..?I have downloaded a few FSX soundpacks from the library and they don't look too different from FS2004 ones but then I wonder why IRIS don't market their product at both sims if it is compatible...Cheers,Geoff

FSX soundpacks are not compatible(as far as i know) with FS9 because of new features with sound in FSX such as, the sound cone. However, FS9 soundpacks will work in FSX.

Thanks for the response. I have found through a little 'research' that FSX and FS9 sound configurations for the internal and startup/shutdown sounds differ very little apart from the issue of numbering convention shown below... For FSX (I assume this isn't a duff sound.cfg and this is really how it should be - don't have FSX, can't test)

[sOUND_ENGINE]number_of_engines=4ENG1_JET_WHINE=JET_WHINE.1.00ENG1_COMBUSTION=COMBUSTION.1.00ENG1_STARTER=STARTER1ENG1_COMBUSTION_START=COMBSTART1ENG1_SHUTDOWN=SHUTDOWN1eng1_JET_WHINE=JET_WHINE.2.00 <----- Note, it's still refering to Eng1...eng1_COMBUSTION=COMBUSTION.2.00eng1_STARTER=STARTER2eng1_COMBUSTION_START=COMBSTART2eng1_SHUTDOWN=SHUTDOWN2etc...

While for FS9, the engine numbers for the sounds must be specified or they'll not work properly...

[sOUND_ENGINE]number_of_engines=4ENG1_JET_WHINE=JET_WHINE.1.00ENG1_COMBUSTION=COMBUSTION.1.00ENG1_STARTER=STARTER1ENG1_COMBUSTION_START=COMBSTART1ENG1_SHUTDOWN=SHUTDOWN1eng2_JET_WHINE=JET_WHINE.2.00 <----- Now Eng2...eng2_COMBUSTION=COMBUSTION.2.00eng2_STARTER=STARTER2eng2_COMBUSTION_START=COMBSTART2eng2_SHUTDOWN=SHUTDOWN2etc...

For the external sounds, yes there are the sound cones but otherwise it's all the same. The sound pack does actually work but because of the directionality, the sound is a bit odd...Cheers,Geoff
