FSGlobal and New Zealand/Victoria Mesh Question

Featured Replies

I'm currently running FSGlobal so I was wondering if there was any need to additionally purchase the "Mountains of New Zealand" or the "Mountains of Victoria"mesh. If so, these meshes come in up to 20 meter resolutions and was wondering which one would be best suited for FS9. Appreciate any help on this as I'm trying to round out the FS9 down under stuff before it all slowly disappears over time :)Mark

FS Global 2010 is about to be released. If you have 2008 it will be discounted. You can get a presales question answered here:http://www.fsglobal2010.com/indexA.htm and click contact.See what they say is you current EFFECTIVE resolution and new one. It might make more sense to invest in a global product than a specific area product. Tell them you are using FS 9.1 - required - (or FSX if using that) for a proper answer. There are some areas where "flat is flat" so resolution is not increased in these areas to keep data size reasonable. Obviously from the titles of the products you mention these are not flat areas. So ask them in what resolution they are providing for those local areas.fsglobal2008.com is still up at the moment so you can check white papers there.

Thanks Ron...appreciate the response. What I was hoping for was someone who actually has used both together and seen if there is any noticeable differences. If say for instance one was to use both together if that would be a nicer option or if it was unnecessary.I did know FSGlobal is going to produce a new version soon. I typically try not to plan any software changes until the software is released to the public and the general consensus is that it is a worth while change. With regards to doing research, one of the values of having a forum is to ask others who have already done it. That way, you can minimize re-inventing the wheel and hopefully spend more time flying then reading manuals. So my original question is still unanswered. If there is anyone out there who has actually used both FSGlobal and the "Mountains of New Zealand" or the "Mountains of Victoria" mesh together, please feel free to chime in and tell the group what you thoughts are!Mark

Howdy Mark,As I recall, FSGlobal uses SRTM data whereas "Mountains of New Zealand" uses 150m, 75m, 38m and 20m geospatial information obtained directly from LINZ (Land Information NZ). It is therefore highly accurate, whereas SRTM is filled with extraploted data (for example see: Milford Sound). Have been using "Mts. of NZ" since it was first released (as well as NZ Topo and LC) and this Kiwi has no complaints.

Hello,IMHO and AFAIK .. you can use the particular NZ meshes combine with the Global ones..Technically it's no problems as FS2004 wil choice automaticaly the meshes with the higher resolution found in the game.So if the resolution of the NZ meshes is higher than FS Global .. they will be used.If it's the contrary (for this aera) it's useless to buy the NZ meshes.EG I use myself the Genesis meshes worldwide .. and for Switzerland I use other meshes with higher resolution (LOD11) and all run good.VERTEX set at 21Regards.bye.gifGus.

As Gus says, FS will automatically choose the higher resolution. However, if your mesh is the same LOD it can be installed in seperate folders (for example: FSGlobal 2008 LOD10 Mesh and NZ LOD10 Mesh) which in turn can be turned on/off in the scenery .cfg as the situation demands. So, you could use FSGlobal mesh until almost arriving on NZ shores, save the flight; switch Mesh folders to NZ Mesh; exit, restart FS and resume your flight (messy I know, but doable). Just a thought.

Thanks Gus and Capt'n! Now those are responses that I can use.FYI for the group...Keep in mind that I do use FSGlobal and it has been a very nice enhancement to FS9...BUT...To date, I've found that the FSGlobal site is so generic and lacking in useable information that it really becomes a choice. Either sludge through the sales hype and product box photos or read a document that is way too detailed and has far to much superfluous information and is for FSX. The FS9 white papers, (or lack of), have been absolutely useless so far. Mark
