Having trouble with Climb speed w/JS41 in tutorial

Featured Replies

I am trying to learn the proper way to climb with this outstanding aircraft. Here is my problem. I have my condition levers at 98%, and am on the 295 deg hdg out of KHPN. I am climbing and trim my aircraft to climb at 170 kts. Everything appears stable. I enable my FMC dct to ELIOT, and click on NAV. I then turn on autopilot. As soon as I do, my speed begins to climb. If I use elevator trim to readjust for the 170 kts climb, my AP disconnects. I retrim, and try to reconnect AP. Again, speed starts to climb, and so on. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Greg. When you enable the auto pilot it probably goes into ATL mode, with a green 'ON' shown. What you need to do is dial in the altitude you want, and press ALT SEL, which will show 'ARM' in orange. This sets the aircraft up to climb, but then you need to tell it how (either V/S or IAS mode). In this case IAS, so click the IAS button. Make sure you have full thrust, and the aircraft will pitch up to maintain the IAS the aircraft was at when IAS mode was enabled. The target climb speed will be shown on the EADI in blue, in the bottom right corner, and can be adjusted by the up/down dial on the AP panel.Hope that helps.
