More propeller torque than I know what to do with!

Featured Replies

So i've got a real head scratcher here and I'm not sure what to do. So I'm looking to you good people of the AVSIM forum. About two weeks ago I fired up FSX, made a few good flights, and then left for a 10 day vacation. I came back, fired up FSX, and have a new problem out of the blue. Its what I'm calling extreme propeller torque. Now I know that its typical of a single engine propeller driven plane to experience some P-factor on take off and climb out and that some rudder will be needed to keep the airplane tracking straight. What I am experiencing now is the need to apply a lot more rudder during take off and climb out to counter extreme yaw to the left. Also once I have reached cruising altitude I can not get the plane to achieve straight and level flight. Instead I have a slow but constant roll to the left. If I try to trim it out then I end up with a roll to the right. So now let me walk you though the steps I have taken so far. Note that all this testing was done with weather turned off. I also calibrated my controls regularly.1. I usually fly with a Carenado Cherokee 180. So I switched to the default FSX Cessna 172. Still had the same slow roll to the left.2. I thought maybe it was my yoke or rudder peddles. So I did a flight using a Saitek joystick. Still had the same slow roll to the left 3. Made flight using keyboard with the same results.4. It was at this time I felt like it was extreme propeller torque so I plugged back in my yoke and peddles and made flights using both a light jet and a twin beech baron. Planes flew with minimal rudder input on take off and maintained straight and level flight.5. Made flight with default Cessna 172 using with the auto rudder feature checked. Plane flew straight and level. Once auto rudder is turned off plane has slow roll to the left.6. My copy of windows 7 arrived so I decided to wipe the slate clean and do a fresh install of FSX with my new copy of windows 7. Still have extreme yaw on take off and slow roll to the left at cruising altitude. So unless I am flying a twin or a jet. I have extreme yaw on take off and can not obtain straight and level flight. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sure sounds like fuel imbalance. Check the flight you are using for startup. Check to see fuel load is at the same on both sides, check to see that the default Cessna is set to `both` on the fuel lever. Most likely a carryover from a previous saved flight.

Have you checked your outside view to see if your rudder is deflected? Happens to me every once and a while with CH pedals.

Check your passenger and fuel load?Wait- slow roll to the left or extreme yaw?
That is a great idea and I can't believe I didn't think to check that. I did go a head and load up a flight in the default Cessna using a 100% fuel in both tanks and with a pilot and passenger both at 170 pounds. The problem still persist. Let me clarify on the extreme yaw and slow roll. During take off shortly after I leave the ground and am maintaining proper climb out speed I have an extreme turn to the left. I can use a lot of aileron to hold the plane level but If I don't apply a ton of rudder the plane will actually rotate around about 30-40 degree's to the left.Where I am also having a problem is trying to maintain straight and level flight. The plane makes a really slow roll to the left and will just fly its self in circles. Now its hard to tell in a virtual plane but it feels like this turing and slow roll is coming from the rudder and not so much a roll because of aileron. Also the fact that once I turn on auto rudder the plane will fly straight and level.

I to fly with CH pedals and have had this problem in the past. What makes me believe its not the pedals is that I still have the same problems when using just a keyboard to fly and also the problem only seems to exist with single engine prop planes.I really appreciate everybody's reply's.

I wish you had given us this information in the first place. CH Products yoke, by default make a (crazy) default application of one the yoke levers to the RUDDER. Trouble is in the settings window you have to scroll the page down to SEE this setting. I feel sure this has been posted many times in CG and Hardware forums and frankly, is something that CH should LONG since have corrected. Bet that is the problem, your left turn tendency is a function of having TWO devices trying to control rudder at the same time... each time you use one, it takes control - which is why it suddenly appears as you throttle back and reduce the prop after take off... this in turn affects the zero-zero setting of the rudder and then everything gets out of synch. Which explains why the problem persists even after changing controllers. Did you remember to remove the default rudder function from the Saitek joystick?BTW, ALWAYS use the keypad `5` when starting FS or changing aircraft to re-synch the controls.
