Window Placements

OK, that description may sound confusing, but I have scoured the web for Win 7 stuff and cannot find an answer. So I thought I'd lay it on the crowd here to see if there's a simple solution:I do a lot of aircraft, mission, and scenery addons for beta testing. In doing so, it is most useful to have a Desktop icon that points directly to the folder where I do the D: drive downloads, and another one on the opposite side of the Desktop that points directly to the FSX folder on my C: drive (I have a widescreen display and work mostly in windowed mode rather than full screen for most new windows). In XP I could organize the size and shape of the folders that popped up and then once closed they would retain or remember these parameters and always come back in the same place on the screen for drag and drop operations. In Win-7 I can do a Tools/Folder Options/View/Apply to folders command, but this doesn't quite do the trick, since the all that happens is the next folder that pops up is basically layered right on top of the previously opened folder. How can I get Win-7 to remember not only the size and shape of my folder windows, but where they should be located when called up?

I have preferred to have the same window size and location in pre-Windows 7 but I have not been able to get Win 7 to do it the way previous Windows environments did. When searching in early Windows 7 RC forums, I found some others were complaining about this change of behaviour and one person suggested Window Manager by Desksoft as a solution. I have tried and purchased this utility and, with a bit of fine tuning, it seems to be satisfactory. It does take some effort to get it working the way you might expect but it is quite versatile and can work with most applications that I have used it with so far.Rick

Rick,Appreciate the comback. So let me get this straight: The addon program you DL'd allows for placement of a new window from a Desktop clickable icon that is in the same configuration and position as it's previous placement? That's what I am seeking.Ghost

Yes, Ghost, that is my experience with most applications. Window size and location is retained by Window Manager, at least in most cases. I did find one game program that insisted on ignoring Window Manager control but even that one worked sometimes. There are a variety of settings and entries for identifying program windows but the defaults work most of the time. I also found that I had to adjust the default entries associated with Windows Explorer -- my main reason for trying this utility -- to achieve the exact behaviour that I had with other Windows versions. By default, data for all windows are stored in Window Manager but you can choose to have it ignore those not needed by manually editing data through the Window Manager GUI. Impact on system performance is minimal. There may also be a 30-day trial period before purchase is required. The website is desksoft.comRick
