Running 4 screens - what are (or will be) my options?

Featured Replies

I am starting to plan a computer upgrade. One of my requirements will be to run 4 screens:

  • 3 LCD panels at 1680x1050 for multi-screen gaming (i.e. FSX)
  • 1 Wacom Cintiq at 1280x1050

Currently, I am running three screens (2 LCD's + Cintiq) and that involves the kludge of using a PCI card to power one of them. The PCI video card has been nothing but trouble and I'd prefer to stay pure PCI-e (or the equivalent) next round.I've been reading about Nvidia and ATI's options for multi-screen gaming (ATI has something out, Nvidia not yet?), and it's leaving me more confused than I started. I can't sort out if this sort of configuration will work off 1 card, 2 SLI cards, or some complex configuration of cards, adapters, and black magic. It seems like 3 screens might be easy enough, but adding in that fourth tends to muck things up.My LCD panels have DVI connections. I'm hoping I don't have to buy new panels as part of this upgrade. I just want to add 1 more of the kind I have already. Is there any hope for me here?

ATi's multi-screen solution (Eyefinity) allows for the use of 3 monitors with one graphics card, provided one of your monitors either has a DisplayPort connection, or that you use an active DisplayPort adapter with a monitor which has a DVI connection. For 4 screens you'd still need another card. NV's multi-monitor solution actually requires 2 cards for 3 or more screens.

Right, but you can't buy one yet because it has yet to be released for sale. They pre-announced it last year but it doesn't exist yet. Supposedly it may go on sale next month.
