February 26, 201016 yr I am considering to buy a new mobo Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. I am choosing this one because I can have 2 e-Sata and the new USB 3.0 on it.As processor I am choosing the Intel I7-920.But I am at lost for which DDRAM 3 to choose. Not so much the brand but mainly which type: DDR3 1600 or 1333. Searching in various forums it seems that there could be a problem with the 1600.Or should I aim 2200 or 2000 or 1800.What are your experience ?I know that there are lot of ASUS believers out there but that brand cannot (yet) provide e-Sata and USB 3.0 together.Only if it appears that Gigabyte has too much problem would I change my mind.Roger Roger See my specs in my profile

At a minimum you want 1600 6CL or faster, if you are not into overclocking that much dont waste your time with costly 2000 speed memory (which BTW had major issues when first introduced last spring). Do some digging around some of the better hardware sites like Anand and TomsHardware for "DDR3" reviews so you'll know what to expect and what to look for. What other purposes for your rig?

I will look into it.I did check TomsHardware. I do not know about Anand Again I will look into that. Some of my searches semed to point to an 1333 OCZ ot a 1800 (or 2000 Corsair). The difference in efficiency is for the OCZ compared to its price. The rig is mainly for FSX. So it is mainly the processor that is important to me. My Abit AW9D Max has probably died. A technician is checking it for me. I know that the actual DDR2 are good. So if it is not the mobo then it must be the processor. My supplier in Belgium told me that the old 775 mobo (with e-sata) is probably hard to get now due to the demand for I7 processors. So the decision to upgrtade to I7 is not yet definitive. But I am studying the possibility (and the price ???).Thank you.Roger Roger See my specs in my profile

It will be faster over the 1333. I have Patriot Memory 1600LL with XMP profile and I have no problems with it. Best part about it- its cheap!Gigabyte makes good mobos IMMO. I have the EX58-UD3R with not problems so far. Like FlyingBits said Do some digging around some of the better hardware sites, Also try a Google search- like DDR3 1600 - and see what you get. Remember Google is our friend.

March 1, 201016 yr I know that there are lot of ASUS believers out there but that brand cannot (yet) provide e-Sata and USB 3.0 together.RogerAs FlyingBits has already mentioned Asus already has a motherboard with eSATA + USB3.0 and 6.0Gbps. SATA with more on the way. You might also want to consider waiting a little longer for Intel to update the X58 chipset with SATA III support on the ICH instead of the Marvell controller that is used currently on Gigabyte and Asus motherboards. It will help me.Meanwhile I got an answer from the technician and it appears that my E6750 CPU failed. I did overclocking but I was very cautious to stay way in the limits of the components. Did I make a mistake or is it bad luck? I will now replace the E6750 with a E8500 (hoping that the Abit AW9D max can support it).Replacing the mobo, CPU and memories will be postponed to next year. But this way I did my homework and I will just need to keep an eye on the developments for the next 12 months. And probably many problems with FSX and Windows 7 will have been solved. And yes the ASUS has eSata + USB3.0. I did check it out. By next year there will probably be external HD and other hardware taking advantage of these technics.Thank you again. I will keep on lurking in this forum.Roger Roger See my specs in my profile
