March 2, 201016 yr To start with - I am running FSX on XP pro, all SP updates current on both FSX as well as my OS, and have Active Sky Evolution (just released - no prior install of ASX or ASA so it was a full install vs an update). The issue: ATIS (the generic FSX ATIS) changes it's identifier with each transmission, although the actual information itself (winds, altimeter, etc) remains unchanged. This problem only seems to occur when ASE is running. To illustrate an example, an ATIS transmission will start with "Information India", give the weather, runway and local NOTAM information, then start again with Information "Mike", then information "Sierra, etc. - every subsequent identifier is different transmission after transmission. Very strange.Any thoughts, suggestions, suspicions, ideas?Lee
March 3, 201016 yr Hi Lee and Welcome,That would be all under FS ATIS control as we jst suply the data to FS.
March 3, 201016 yr Author Hi, Jim - I understand - you are correct in that it is indeed FSX ATIS. However, FSX ATIS does not act like that unless ASE is running. Since ASE in every other way augments and enhances FSX, this is a definite "bug". I suspect that since this does not happen unless ASE is running, that there is something in the way the information is coded that causes FS ATIS to keep changing identifiers on each transmission. If it helps at all, there seems no particular order or pattern to this (eg. A, B, C, D, etc). Have you been able to replicate this?
March 4, 201016 yr Hi, I'll admit I never tried, but what weather programs have you used in the past? Just wondering! Now, if ASE was causing this, what would be the harm?
March 4, 201016 yr Author Hi,I'll admit I never tried, but what weather programs have you used in the past? Just wondering! Now, if ASE was causing this, what would be the harm?Hi, Jim. This is the first weather program I have used - before it was just all FSX. I guess I'm a bit surprised to hear you ask what would be the harm. I mean, I suppose my family is still safe and all. I'm not sure I get the question. I didn't buy the program to be harmless, I bought it to be an improvement over generic FSX. Basically I had hoped Active Sky would provide better weather generation so I wouldn't see clear to the ground after climbing out of the top of an overcast, or I wouldn't see an outline of REILS through 1/2 mile vis at the FAF. So far, however, I am a bit underwhelmed with what ASE is doing as far as depicting accurate overcasts, undercasts and layers - which it really doesn't. On top of that, when I'm at the gate powering up and it comes time to program winds, etc, in the FMC, I know I can't believe ATIS as long as ASE has loaded the weather to FSX.It's difficult to write this as I am really not a complainer by nature. Reading this might give you a different impression, but I hope you understand that I am very frustrated. I truly would like nothing more at this point than for you to say, "You dork - you forgot to check the Logic Integration and Parsing Subderivation box!" And I'd happily feel like a humble jerk just to get the program to do what I had hoped all along that it could. After spending the money on the program and working several hours to configure it and troubleshoot it, I am actually starting to grow nostalgic over FSX's default weather handling.
March 4, 201016 yr Moderator PMFJI but I have a WAG as to what might be happening. This is JUST a guess and comes without any knkowledge of the inner workings of FS OR ASE.It is my understanding that FSX ATIS is reporting current weather info. When new info is reported, the id will change even if the info is the same. I'm guessing that this is a phenomena of any weather reporting program - every time new data is sent to FSX, it will change the ID.As I said, this is a WAG and I could be way out in left field but it does seem logical.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

Actually, I thought of this as well - and I think that ultimately you are correct in that it may have something to do with FSX sensing a revised/updated weather observation. In r/w flying, ATIS generally is updated every hour, but runway/approach changes, significant weather changes like wind, precip or altimeter, etc, will cause more spontaneous updates with a revised identifier next in line in the alphabet. In my case, the identifier change is not alphabetical, and ceiling changes in ASOS or wind shifts in ATIS are wild and nothing like real life. However, I have done some more testing last night. If I have ASE pull down current weather (rather than creating the layers and winds myself) and then invoke FSX, things work reasonably well. By "reasonably", I mean the shifting winds and changing ceilings do not seem to occur - at least not with such wild and implausible fluctuations - from report to report. But the ATIS identifier will still change even if all observations are the same (and clouds coverage is still cumulus broken vs stratus ovc :( ). So a theory that the weather changes rapidly for whatever reason, therefore causing ATIS identifier change as an approriate secondary artifact - seems not so plausible to me.I notice that when I put in a cloud layer - say 1000 feet thick with a 900 foot base, solid stratus - the base appears to be the same, although it never appears as stratus (always cumulus, even with the slider all the way to stratus in options). But the tops seem to peak higher and higher, and that's what the ASOS may be calling "ceilings" (even though they're tops). When I go back to ASE, I notice that the layer details have changed to show a much thicker cloud bank than I originally put in.Complicated and frustrating problem - but I still look forward to additional thoughts or ideas on this one....
