How to move FS9 to a new computer?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm sure this question has been asked before but I have not been able to find it in search. If you include FS9 in search you get an error because it is three characters or less so I would appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction. I am buying a new laptop and want to move FS9 to it. My FS9 folder contains a lot of add-ons that I purchased on the internet as downloads over the last five years so I can't install them from scratch. I have FS9 itself and a few add-ons on disk but apart from that everything is just on my hard drive. What is the best way to install FS9 with all the add-ons to my new computer. My old laptop is Windows XP Professional and the new one will be Windows 7 Home Premium.Any advice would be very much appreciated. ThanksGerry

Hello !If you install FS9 on your new computer, don't forget the "XP" compatibility mode, and the Microsoft Update.Only few add-ons will work if you copy all your old FS2004 folder to your new computer. You will still need to install some add-ons again. What are your add-ons ? Most payware add-ons you can download are using DRMs. So you'll need to install them again and even ask authors or vendors for new keys. It's easy with Flight1 add-ons... it can be a big problem for other add-ons. I just hope you have a lot of time for that, and don't need to reinstall add-ons like the SimSoftWorkshop A310.Good luck.

I moved FS9 from my old XP machine to my new Windows 7 machine by doing the following.1) Copied all of my FS9 files to an external hard drive. That includes the FS9 folder and all other folders where addons are installed or the FS9 configuration files are stored. I use Norton Ghost to create backups and did so in this case.2) Installed FS9 on the new PC and then made a copy of the just installed FS9 folder(s) on my new PC. Remember the FS9 folder containing your fs9.cfg file and also your flight plans.3) From the external drive, I copied the entire contents of the FS9 folders to my new PC overwriting the FS9 folders. The above method worked very well and I didn't lose a single addon. I did however had to reregister things like FSUIPC, DreamTeam's sceneries and some other things, but that cannot be avoided. UT, AS6.5 and GE Pro also had to be reinstalled. But this method did save me a lot(!) of time downloading and reinstalling many things including over 200 payware and freebie sceneries.

Thank you for the information. I only ordered my new laptop today so don't have a confirmed delivery date yet but just gathering information at the moment.

Hello,I don't understand this stance: (make non sens for me)

2) Installed FS9 on the new PC and then made a copy of the just installed FS9 folder(s) on my new PC. Remember the FS9 folder containing your fs9.cfg file and also your flight plans.
You copy from your new PC .. and you paste where ?Regards.bye.gifGus.

Sorry, let me phrase my points again.1) Copy your FS9 folders from your OLD PC onto an external drive or something that you can use to read to on your NEW PC.2) Install FS9 onto your NEW PC using the CD's. Decide whether or not to make a backup of FS9 at this point. The backup can be used in case something wrong happens in step 3.3) Copy the FS9 files (from your OLDPC) from the external drive to your NEW PC by overwriting the FS9 folder(s) on your new PC. Just overwrite the entire FS9 folder on your NEW PC with the folder you copied from your OLD PC.You have to re-register FSUIPC, Dreamteam's airports and so on. This can't be helped. You also have to install Ultimate Terrain, REX and any other addon as well. But the method I used above kept a lot of payware and freebie addons intact without any extra work.

Hello,Thank's for the clarification .. it's made sens now :)Regards.bye.gifGus.
